NYI FUTURE WATCH: BLAKE COMEAU

by Staff Writer / New York Islanders
2004 Second Round Draft Pick

By Jason Lockhart

It was a coming out party for Blake Comeau in 2006. After playing with the Kelowna Rockets for five seasons and placing second on the team in points last year, Comeau made the next step towards becoming an NHLer by appearing in his first World Junior Championship and suiting up for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Comeau, along with Ryan O'Marra, played on Team Canada's Gold Medal-winning squad. The 6-1 forward was named an alternate captain for Team Canada and led by example, registering seven points (three goals, four assists), which was tops on the team.

The Saskatchewan native wasn't done with his impressive year. Because of his stellar play with Kelowna, Comeau was recalled by the Sound Tigers to participate in their 2006 playoff run. Comeau gained valuable experience playing on his first pro team, notching three assists in seven games.

Now more experienced, confident and composed than he was at his first training camp in 2005, Comeau is prepared to crack the Islanders lineup. We spoke to Comeau, who recently addressed the following subjects.

On the Islanders organization:
"The Islanders have treated me very well. At my first Development Camp (in 2005) they really took care of us. This year's Development camp has been awesome as well. The organization has been first-class and hopefully with the front office changes we can have some success."

On his 2006 World Junior Championship experience:
"It was unbelievable to be able to play on your home soil and have your family there with you. The atmosphere was great and it feels good to bring home the Gold for your country. My experience at the World Juniors was a good one and it was a confidence booster for this year's Development Camp and Training Camp."

On his Bridgeport experience:
"It was good to play at Bridgeport at the end of last season because I got to meet the guys and measure myself against them. It also made me more comfortable at the Development Camp because I knew the players and knew what type of hockey to expect."

On his style of play:
"I'd consider myself a power forward. I like to play physical and can contribute on the scoreboard when I get the chance. Depending on the style of the other teams, I can play physically, but I can also play the speed game as well. I play like a Brendan Shanahan or Olli Jokinen type. They're willing to go in the corners and get the puck out, and they put up points as well."

On his goals for the year:
"My goal is obviously to crack the Islanders' lineup, but if I don't, I'm not going to get down. I will just try to play my best hockey at Bridgeport. The organization knows what's best for me."

On Trottier and Nolan:
"It's awesome to see Trotts back here. I look forward to working with him throughout the season. As far as Nolan, I've heard nothing but good things about him. I think everyone here is looking forward to next season and we all want to set a good impression from the start."
