NIEDERREITER TO PLAY IN SECOND EXHIBITION

by Dyan LeBourdais / New York Islanders
There has been a lot of speculation about whether or not the Islanders fifth overall draft pick Nino Niederreiter will get the opportunity to make his NHL debut during the 2010-11 season of if the rookie will be set back to his junior team, the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL.

While we don’t yet have the answer for you, the forward is really excited about his opportunity. Later tonight, he will play in the Islanders third exhibition game of the 2010 preseason. He also played in the Islanders exhibition game in Saskatoon on Wednesday evening, losing to the Flames 3-2.

(In the first game) I got a lot of ice time actually. I’m really happy about it. I was even the last shift on the ice that almost scored with eight seconds left in the game. I have to score there. Hopefully tonight it’s going to be the same way. - Nino Niederreiter
The Swiss power forward said a lot about playing in his first NHL preseason game. “(In the first game) I got a lot of ice time actually,” Niederreiter said. “I’m really happy about it. I was even the last shift on the ice that almost scored with eight seconds left in the game. I have to score there. Hopefully tonight it’s going to be the same way.”

Even though the rookie was happy he was getting so much ice time, he still had a few things he wanted to work on in order to prove he’s worthy of one of the Islanders roster spots this season.

“I just want shoot the puck more,” the rookie said. “I probably only had two shots on net last game. I need to have more and go a little harder to the net and make the little things a little bit better.”

Niederreiter added, “I think I’m going to have a little more confidence. I was pretty nervous (the first game) and now I’m on a new line. So it’s a new game. I hope it’s going to be better.”

Speaking of his new line, Niederreiter will be paired with Islanders centerman Frans Nielsen and winger Matt Moulson. This will be Nielsen’s first exhibition game this preseason.

“(Moulson and Nielsen) are two fantastic players,” Nielsen said. “I have already worked with Nielsen a little. It was my first time playing with Moulson. I really like them. It’s great to have guys like that on the same line.”

Later tonight, the Islanders will face the Devils in their first of two preseason games against the New Jersey team. Perhaps we’ll see Niederreiter find the back of the net with the help of his new linemates.
