New York Metro Blind Hockey (NYMBH) was awarded $4,500 by Ridgewood Savings Bank on Wednesday, as the winning recipient for the New York Islanders Community Star of the Week program.

"Ridgewood Savings Bank is proud to partner with the New York Islanders and support the team's many initiatives that improve people's lives," Leonard Stekol, Ridgewood's Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer said. "As we celebrate our 100th year of 'multiplying the good' in our communities, we congratulate NY Metro Blind Hockey, winner of this year's 'Ridgewood Community Heroes Program.' We applaud this great organization that helps to create opportunities for visually impaired individuals to be part of the game, stay active, and engage in true teamwork."

Since 2017, NYMBH has been proud to provide Long Island and the Metro New York area with programs for visually impaired athletes of all ages to participate in hockey programs. Based out of IceWorks in Syosset, NYMBH offers ice sessions twice a month with certified youth hockey coaches and receive additional help and insight from volunteers who play at the collegiate and high school levels. The organization also provides its athletes with opportunities to compete in tournaments around the country against other visually impaired hockey programs.
"It's fantastic news," Ted Caputo, who runs NYMBH, said of being named the Community Star of the Week winner. "Hockey happens to be an expensive sport. The cost of the sport is not within the financial means for many families, especially those dealing with the expenses of having a visually impaired child. Our dream with NYMBH has been to always rid that cost for anyone that is interested in joining. So far we've been able to do that and provide free access. This donation from Ridgewood will really help us continue to achieve that."
