In the first of four matchups between the two clubs this season, the Islanders defeated the Sabres 2-1 at First Niagara Center. Matt Moulson scored a power play goal at 6:47 of the first period and Jochen Hecht evened the score 1:54 into the third, but Brian Rolston scored the game-winner at 9:23. Later in the third period, the Islanders killed an incredible 5-on-3 that lasted 1:34 to keep the one-goal lead. For the win, Al Montoya stopped 30-of-31 shots.
