The National Hockey League announced today that Evgeni Nabokov was named the Third Star of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, Jan. 22.
Nabokov, 36, posted a 3-0-0 record last week, stopping 89-of-91 shots (97.8%) for a 0.65 goals against average. The first-year Islander opened the week with his 51st career shutout on Tuesday, Jan. 17 in Washington. Nabokov then posted consecutive one-goal performances on Thursday, Jan. 19 in Philadelphia and Saturday, Jan. 21 against Carolina to extend his winning streak to an Islanders season-high four games.
This season, Nabokov has a 10-11-1 record with a 2.43 goals against average (GAA) and a .922 save percentage (save%) in 23 games. He leads all Islanders goaltenders in wins, GAA, save% and games played.
The Islanders claimed Nabokov off of waivers on Jan. 22, 2011. The Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan native was drafted in the ninth round, 219th overall, of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks. In nine NHL seasons with San Jose, Nabokov appeared in 563 games, posting a 293-178-29-37 (W-L-T-OT) record with a 2.39 GAA and a .912 save%. He also played in 80 NHL playoff games with San Jose, posting a 40-38 record with a 2.29 GAA and a .913 save%.
