Morning Skate Updates - Islanders at Coyotes

by Cory Wright / New York Islanders
The Islanders were on the job this morning, taking the ice at Arena ahead of tonight’s game against the Phoenix Coyotes. It’s the fifth game of a five-game Western road trip for the Islanders and they’ll look to sweep the season series with the Coyotes. As the Islanders are in Arizona, tonight’s puck drop is at 9:00 p.m. eastern time.

Here are some news, notes and quotes from Thursday’s Skate.

Calm Before the Strome:
Ryan Strome practiced with the team Wednesday and skated Thursday, but will not draw into the lineup tonight. Coach Capuano wants to give Strome more time to adjust to the team and his new surroundings.

Capuano: We just want to get him acclimated to our meetings. I want to get him involved in our power play, but I’m sure you can expect him pretty soon.

Poulin in Goal: After a 46-save performance on Tuesday, Kevin Poulin is back in net for the Islanders Thursday.

Capuano said he hadn’t decided on his backup for tonight, suggesting that Evgeni Nabokov could be on the bench backing up Poulin.

Strait off IR: Brian Strait was activated off the IR and is paired with Aaron Ness tonight while Matt Carkner is a healthy scratch. Capuano said he plans on regulating Strait’s minutes since he hasn’t played in 23 games.

Martinek on IR:
Radek Martinek (back spasms) was placed on Injured Reserve, retroactive to Nov. 29.

All-Time: The Islanders are 32-23-13 against the Phoenix Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets.
