Greiss Starts: Thomas Greiss will start in goal tonight for the Islanders. JF Berube, the Islanders waiver pickup, will back up Greiss Friday.
Greiss on starting the season opener: It always nice to get in the net, have some fun with the boys and just play. It always takes a while to get used to a new team, in preseason there’s a bunch of different guys in there. Next couple of games we’ll get to know each other really well.
Halak Day-to-Day: Jaroslav Halak is day-to-day with an upper-body injury, but Head Coach Jack Capuano said he is progressing well after practicing three straight days. Halak was on the ice prior to the Islanders morning skate.
Pulock/BernierScratched: Ryan Pulock and Steve Bernier are tonight's scratches. Pulock is still looking to make his NHL debut while Bernier is waiting to make his Isles debut.
Projected Lines: Lee-Tavares-Strome; Bailey-Nielsen-Okposo; Nelson-Grabovski-Kulemin; Martin-Cizikas-Clutterbuck
Barclays Opens: Three years after the announced move to Brooklyn, the Islanders are playing their first regular-season game at Barclays Center. To mark the occasion, there are a series of pre-game festivities including a blue carpet, ceremonial puck drop and a tribute to Al Arbour, who passed away in August. Fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 7:15.
Matt Martin on Opening Night in Brooklyn: It’s starting to feel real. Once we get out there tonight, it will be home now. Obviously we haven’t played a regular-season game here yet, so there are some unknowns about what it’s going to be like. But I think it’s going to be a great experience and we’re just looking for a great crowd and a lot of energy. Hopefully we get the win.
Coach’s Corner – Jack Capuano on what he wants from the Islanders tonight: Compete and Execute. Watching some of the other games and the home openers, I thought teams were a little tentative. There’s a lot of excitement, obviously with the big game here tonight and the new arena. I just want to compete and execute and if we do those things, the rest will take care of themselves.
