The Islanders held their sixth ReMax Open House of the summer Wednesday night with a little extra treat for the hundreds of fans that made their way into the Nassau Coliseum. From the moment the doors opened at 6 p.m., fans made their way into the building for a fun night the whole family could enjoy. Upon entering the arena, each fan was given a bag of popcorn and all children were given a free Islanders street hockey stick. Fans then had the opportunity to check out the view from any seat, getting the chance to see what it would be like to watch Islanders action from the best seats in the house. And then, as an added bonus, fan got the chance to meet defenseman Chris Campoli, take a tour of the Islanders locker room, enjoy the I.C.E. Tour inflatables that were spread out across the arena floor, or even play a game of street hockey on the arena floor.
"There was a lot of excitement in the building," Campoli said, as he signed more than 200 sticks throughout the event. "Seeing all the kids here with their families to support the team means a lot to us. It’s going to be great to be on the ice playing in front of all of them this season. They create a really great atmosphere when we play and really get this building rocking."
At 7 p.m., fans then made their way to seats as the hockey movie Miracle was played on the video board. The movie tells the story of the 1980 United States Olympic hockey teams’ unbelievable run, as they upset the might Russian Red Army team, and then went on to win the gold medal in Lake Placid. Former Islander great Ken Morrow, who was a part of that amazing team, had a video message to the crowd before the movie began.
"Tonight was a lot of fun," said 9-year-old Jonathon, one of the fans on hand. "I got my stick signed by Chris Campoli, then got to play hockey with him and watch a cool movie. I’m excited for hockey season and can’t wait to come to some games with my dad and brothers." Click here
