After taking a look at the top 30 prospects for the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, as ranked by NHL Central Scouting, newyorkislanders.com takes a look at 30 additional prospects



ALEXANDER AVTSYN

THE SKINNY
Avtsyn played in 76 Russia-3 league games during the 2008-09 season, scoring 56 goals and adding 54 helpers for 110 points. He also recorded 130 penalty minutes in his first season with the team.

Avtsyn represented Russia at the 2009 Under-20 Tyumen Region Cup, which also features Slovakia, Sweden and Finland. Prior to that, he played for Russia at the Under-18 Five-Nations Tournament in Sweden.

SIMON BERTILSSON

THE SKINNY
Bertilsson skated in 21 SEL games during the 2008-09 season, earning one assist and two penalty minutes with Brynas. He has also played in 57 games with Brynas’ junior team, totaling 11 goals and 25 assists for 36 points.

Bertilsson represented Sweden at the Under-18 World Junior Championships, recording one assist in six games. In total, he has played in 19 international games for Sweden, compiling four goals and six assists for 10 points and 22 penalty minutes.

ZACH BUDISH

THE SKINNY
Budish played in 15 games with Team Southwest of the Minnesota High School Elite League during the 2008-09 season, scoring 27 points (14-13-27) before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

In 2007-08, Budish recorded 63 points (26-37-63) in 30 games with Edina High School. He was named the team’s Most Valuable Player and to the All-Metro First Team.

Budish is expected to attend the University of Minnesota in the fall.

ANTON BURDASOV

THE SKINNY
Burdasov didn’t get a chance to play in the KHL this year, but represented Russia at the Under-18 Five-Nations Tournament and 2008 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. He is a big scorer and can be an interesting NHL prospect due to his size and scoring touch.

RYAN BUTTON

THE SKINNY
Button has played in 128 career WHL games, recording five goals and 40 assists for 45 points in two seasons with Prince Albert. In 2008-09, he led all Raiders defensemen with 32 assists in 70 games.

Button says his athletic ability comes from his dad, Kevin, who has competed in several triathlons and finished an Ironman in 1998. Button’s cousin, Jennifer, was also a member of the Canadian National Swim Team at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

JORDAN CARON

THE SKINNY
Caron has skated in 161 career QMJHL games, totaling 74 goals and 76 assists for 150 points in three seasons with Rimouski. He has also appeared in 25 playoff games with the Oceanic, recording nine goals and six assists for 15 points.

Caron led Rimouski and ranked 11th overall in the QMJHL with 36 goals in 2008-09. His 67 points (36-31-67) were third on the Oceanic and 28th in the league. Caron also participated in the 2009 CHL Top Prospects Game and represented the QMJHL at the 2008 Canada/Russia Challenge.

SERGEI CHVANOV

THE SKINNY
In 2008-09, Chvanov played in 46 games with Cherepovets 2 of the Russia-3 league, recording 16 goals and 13 assists for 29 points and 38 penalty minutes.

Chvanov skated on Russia’s top line in seven games at the 2009 Under-18 World Junior Championships. He notched three goals and five assists for eight points and a +5 rating as Russia took home a silver medal.

MATTHEW CLARK

THE SKINNY
Clark played in 63 games for Brampton of the OHL in 2008-2009 and compiled 3 goals and 20 assists along with 91 penalty minutes. He played in the OJHL for Brampton in 2007-2008 and had 17 points in 43 games, with 82 penalty minutes.

Clark was born in Colorado and returned to Canada when he was four. His uncle, Ab Demarco, played 10 professional seasons in the NHL and WHA


CALVIN DE HAAN

THE SKINNY
In 2008-09, de Haan finished second among OHL rookie defensemen, and first among all Oshawa blueliners, with 63 points (8-55-63) in 68 games. For his efforts, de Haan was named the Generals’ Rookie of the Year and Top Defenseman. He also competed in the OHL All-Star Classic and 2009 CHL Top Prospects Game.

The Ontario native recorded 42 points (3-39-42) for Kemptville during the 2007-08 season, earning Central Junior Hockey League Player of the Year honors.

STEFAN ELLIOTT

Born: January 30, 1991 in Vancouver, BC, Canada
Current Team: Saskatoon Blades (WHL)

THE SKINNY
Elliott has played in 139 career WHL games, compiling 25 goals and 70 assists for 95 points in parts of three seasons with Saskatoon. He has also appeared in seven playoff games with the Blades, earning four points (1-3-4) and four penalty minutes.

Elliott led Saskatoon defensemen and finished sixth among all OHL blueliners with 55 points (16-39-55) in 2008-09. He also scored eight power-play goals to rank third on the Blades and finished with a +20 rating. Elliot became the first-ever Saskatoon Blade to be named WHL Scholastic Player of the Year after maintaining a 93.3% school average.

RYAN ELLIS

THE SKINNY
Ellis has skated in 120 career OHL games, totaling 37 goals and 115 assists for 152 points in two seasons with Windsor. He has also played in 25 playoff games with the Spitfires, recording 10 goals and 26 assists for 36 points.

In 2008-09, Ellis helped Windsor to OHL and Memorial Cup Championships. He led all OHL defensemen and finished seventh overall with 89 points (22-67-89) in 57 games. Ellis’ +52 rating also ranked second in the league. For his efforts, Ellis was named the Most Outstanding Defenseman in the OHL for 2008-09.

LANDON FERRARO

Born: August 8, 1991 in Trail, BC, Canada
Current Team: Red Deer Rebels (WHL)

THE SKINNY
Ferraro has skated in 126 career WHL games, scoring 50 goals and adding 29 assists for 79 points in parts of three seasons with Red Deer. He has played in one playoff game with the Rebels, going scoreless.

In 2008-09, Ferraro led Red Deer in goals (37), assists (18) and points (55) to capture the team’s Most Valuable Player and Leading Scorer awards. He participated in the 2009 CHL Top Prospects Game and claimed the fastest skater title with a lap time of 14.009 seconds.

Landon is the son of 18-year NHL veteran Ray Ferraro, who played in 316 games for the Islanders and ranks 24th on the team’s all-time scoring list (116-122-238).

PETER HOLLAND

Born: January 14, 1991 in Toronto, ON, Canada
Current Team: Guelph Storm (OHL)

THE SKINNY
Holland has played in 130 career OHL games, recording 36 goals and 54 assists for 90 points in two seasons with Guelph. He has also skated in 14 playoff games with the Storm, totaling five points (4-1-5) and six penalty minutes.

Holland ranked second on Guelph with 67 points (28-39-67) in 2008-09. He then led the Storm with four goals in the playoffs. Holland capped off a full season of hockey by playing in the 2008 Canada/Russia Challenge, 2009 All-Star Classic and 2009 CHL Top Prospects Game.

NAZEM KADRI

THE SKINNY
Kadri has played in 186 career OHL games, compiling 57 goals and 108 assists for 165 points in three seasons split between Kitchener and London. He has also skated in 43 playoff games, recording 18 goals and 31 assists for 49 points.

Despite suffering a broken jaw in the middle of the 2008-09 season, Kadri led the OHL with 10 shorthanded points (5-5-10) and finished ninth in the league in assists (53). He ranked second on the Knights, behind just John Tavares, with 78 points (25-53-78) in 56 games. Kadri also had a goal for the West at the OHL All-Star Classic.

MARTIN KARLSSON

THE SKINNY
Karlsson skated in eight SEL games with Leksand this season, going scoreless with two penalty minutes. He has played in 49 career games with Leksand’s junior team, recording 14 goals and 18 assists for 32 points and 52 penalty minutes.

Karlsson represented Sweden at the 2009 Under-18 World Junior Championships, where he went scoreless in six contests. In total, Karlsson has appeared in 14 games with Sweden’s Under-18 team, totaling three points (1-2-3) and 12 penalty minutes.

MIKKO KOSKINEN

Born: July 18, 1988 in Vantaa, Finland
Current Team: Espoo Blues (SM-Liiga)

THE SKINNY
Koskinen’s best aspect might be his size at 6’5’’. He played in 33 games for Espoo during the 2008-09 season, recording a 1.91 goals-against average and .931 save percentage. Koskinen also appeared in nine games with Espoo’s junior team, compiling a 1.65 goals-against average and .930 save percentage.

ANTON LANDER

Height: 6’0’’            Weight: 194
Born: April 24, 1991 in Sundsvall, Sweden
Current Team: Timra IK (SEL)
Final NHL Central Scouting Ranking: #19 European Skater

THE SKINNY
Lander has played in 79 SEL games, totaling five goals and eight assists for 13 points in parts of two seasons with Timra. He has skated in 10 playoff games with Timra, going scoreless.

Lander has also appeared in 36 contests with Timra’s junior team, recording 12 goals and 16 assists for 28 points. He represented Sweden at the 2009 Under-18 World Junior Championships, scoring nine points (2-7-9) in six games as his home country earned a fifth-place finish.

NICK LEDDY

Born: March 20, 1991 in Eden Prairie, MN, United States

THE SKINNY
Leddy turned down an offer to compete with the U.S. National Training Development Program in 2008-09, instead opting to play for his high school. He led all Eden Prairie defensemen with 37 points (8-29-37) in 25 games, guiding the Eagles to the Class 2A State Championship. It was the first-ever championship for Eden Prairie, who defeated Moorhead, 4-2, in front of more than 15,000 fans at the Xcel Energy Center (home of the Wild).

Leddy won the 2009 Mr. Hockey Award, which is given out each year to the most outstanding senior high school hockey player in Minnesota. He was also selected as the Star Tribune’s Player of the Year. Leddy will attend the University of Minnesota in the fall.

MATTIAS LINDSTROM

Born: March 21, 1991 in Lulea, Sweden
Current Team: Skelleftea AIK (SEL)
Final NHL Central Scouting Ranking: #22 European Skater

THE SKINNY
Lindstrom made his SEL debut in 2008-09, scoring one goal in seven games with Skelleftea. He has played in 52 contests with Skelleftea’s junior team, compiling 13 goals and six assists for 19 points and 86 penalty minutes.

Lindstrom represented Sweden at the 2009 Under-18 World Junior Championships, going scoreless in six games. In total, he has skated in 22 international contests with the Under-18 team, totaling four goals and three assists for seven points.

JEREMY MORIN

Born: April 16, 1991 in Auburn, NY, United States
Current Team: USA U-18 (USDP)
Final NHL Central Scouting Ranking: #33 North American Skater

THE SKINNY
Morin played in 46 games in 2008-2009 for the USA U-18 team and scored 26 goals. He totaled 48 points and had 99 penalty minutes.

Jeremy, a right-handed forward, comes from a family of three left-handed defensemen. He was ranked as high as 21st at midterm ranks.

KRISTIAN NAKYVA

Born: November 18, 1990 in Helsinki, Finland
Current Team: Espoo Blues (SM-Liiga)

THE SKINNY
Nakyva made his SM-Liiga debut in 2008-09, earning two assists and two penalty minutes in six games with Espoo. He has also played in 80 games with Espoo’s junior teams, totaling eight goals and 22 assists for 30 points and 32 penalty minutes.

Nakyva skated in nine games with Finland’s Under-20 team this season, going scoreless with a +2 rating and two penalty minutes.

DYLAN OLSEN

Born: January 3, 1991 in Salt Lake City, UT, United States
Current Team: Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL)

THE SKINNY
Olsen has played in 102 career AJHL games, totaling 18 goals and 35 assists for 53 points. He has also recorded 168 penalty minutes in two seasons with Camrose.

In 2007-08, Olsen helped the Kodiaks to the Alberta Junior Hockey League Championship. This season, he participated in the World Junior A Challenge, CJHL Prospects Game and AJHL All-Star Game. Olsen will attend the University of Minnesota Duluth in the fall.

KYLE PALMIERI

Born: February 1, 1991 in Smithtown, NY, United States
Current Team: USA U-18 (USDP)

THE SKINNY
Palmieri played in 33 games with the U.S. Under-18 National Training Development Program in 2008-09, tallying 15 goals, including four game-winners, and 30 points (15-15-30).

He scored four points (2-2-4) in six games to help the United States win a bronze medal at the 2008 Under-18 World Championships. The Long Island native also recorded a hat trick against Finland at the 2008 Five-Nations Tournament to lead the United States to a gold medal.

PHILIPPE PARADIS

Born: January 2, 1991 in Dolbeau, QC, Canada
Current Team: Shawinigan Cataractes (QMJHL)

THE SKINNY
Paradis has skated in 111 career QMJHL games, compiling 30 goals and 43 assists for 73 points in two seasons with Shawinigan. He has also played in 24 playoff games with the Cataractes, recording six goals and six assists for 12 points.

In 2008-09, Paradis ranked tied for sixth on Shawinigan with a career-best 50 points (19-31-50). He scored 12 points in the playoffs before the Cataractes lost to Drummondville in the seventh game of President Cup Finals.

ANTON RODIN

Born: November 21, 1990 in Stockholm, Sweden
Current Team: IK Oskarshamn (Swe-2)

THE SKINNY
Rodin has played in 73 Swedish junior games, scoring 37 goals and adding 37 assists for 74 points with Brynas. In 2008-09, he skated in six games with Oskarshamn of Allsvenskan (the second-highest league in Sweden), going scoreless with two penalty minutes.

Rodin recorded seven points (4-3-7) in four games while representing Sweden at the Under-20 Five-Nations Tournament. He has proved to be an effective scorer and dangler on the junior level.

OLIVIER ROY

Born: July 12, 1991 in Amqui, QC, Canada
Current Team: Cape Breton Screaming Eagles (QMJHL)
Final NHL Central Scouting Ranking: #2 North American Goalie

THE SKINNY
Roy is the top-ranked QMJHL goalie prospect in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. In 2008-09, he posted a 35-13-0 record with a 3.04 goals-against average and .906 save percentage to help Cape Breton finish second in the Atlantic Division. Roy also led the QMJHL in shootout save percentage, stopping all 14 shots he faced. He played in the 2009 CHL Top Prospects Game and was Team Quebec’s Player of the Game in the 2008 Canada/Russia Challenge.

In 2007-08, Roy set a QMJHL record with 27 wins as a 16-year-old rookie. His four shutouts also established a new record for most shutouts in a season by a rookie goaltender. For his efforts, Roy was named 2007-08 Rookie of the Year and Defensive Rookie of the Year.

DREW SHORE

THE SKINNY
Shore skated in 53 games with the U.S. Under-18 National Training Development Program in 2008-09, leading the team in assists (23) and ranking second in points (37).

In 2007-08, Shore scored 38 points (13-25-38) to help the U.S. Under-17 team to 30 wins, which earned the National Training Development Program its fifth consecutive berth in the North American Hockey League’s Robertson Cup Playoffs. Shore will attend Denver University in the fall.

ALEXANDER URBOM

Born: December 20, 1990 in Stockholm, Sweden
Current Team: Djurgardens IF (SEL)

THE SKINNY
Urbom made his SEL debut this season, going scoreless with two penalty minutes in 28 games for Djurgardens. He has also played in 55 games with Djurgardens’ junior team, totaling eight goals and 14 assists for 22 points in parts of two seasons.

Urbom has competed internationally on Sweden’s Under-19 and Under-18 teams. He has skated in 15 total international games, recording one goal and three assists for four points.

SAMI VATANEN

Height: 5’9’’            Weight: 163
Born: June 3, 1991 in Jyvaskyla, Finland
Current Team: Jyp Jr. (Finland-Jr.)
Final NHL Central Scouting Ranking: #16 European Skater

THE SKINNY
Vatanen has played 55 career Finnish junior games, compiling 12 goals and 36 assists for 48 points with Jyp. He also represented Finland on the Under-20 team, going scoreless with two penalty minutes in two games.

Vatanen twice skated for Finland at the Under-18 World Junior Championships. He registered three assists in six games at the 2008 tournament. Vatanen then captained Finland to a bronze medal at the 2009 championships in Fargo, ND.

ETHAN WEREK

Height: 6’1’’            Weight: 190
Born: June 7, 1991 in Markham, ON, Canada
Current Team: Kingston (OHL)
Final NHL Central Scouting Ranking: #32 North American Skater

THE SKINNY
Werek joined Kingston in 2008 and scored 32 goals in 66 games. He totaled 64 points and had 83 penatly minutes. He represented Canada at the world under-18 hockey championships in 2009.

Werek likes to model himself after Joe Thornton because of his leadership abilities on the ice. He started playing ice hockey when he was five years old.
