Steady defenseman inked through 07-08

The Islanders have signed defenseman Radek Martinek to a new two-year contract that will keep him in an Islanders uniform through the 2007-08 season.

"Radek has been a very steady defenseman for us the last four seasons and he's only gotten better as he's made the adjustment to North America and the NHL game," said Islanders general manager Mike Milbury. "Like Shawn Bates, Radek expressed to us that wanted to stay an Islander, so we came up with a fair contract rather quickly."

The 29-year old Martinek has played 188 games over four seasons with the Islanders after the organization selected him in the eighth round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. For his NHL career, the 6-1, 205-pound defenseman has eight goals and 27 assists.

"It feels great to have a deal done before the end of the season and know I'm an Islander for at least the next two years," said Martinek, prior to his Islanders hosting New Jersey tonight at Nassau Coliseum. "The franchise has been good to me and I really enjoy Long Island. It was important to me to stay an Islander."
