The summer is winding down, but the Islanders Community Events Tour is still in full swing. Last week, Islanders goaltender Joey MacDonald was greeted by hundreds of excited young fans all across Long Island, gearing up for the 2008-09 Islanders season. The Nova Scotia-native took to the streets, making stops at eight places during a six-day span.

On Sunday, July 31, MacDonald, Chris Campoli and the I.C.E. Tour kicked things off by stopping at Newbridge Arena in Bellmore for another successful Rink Day. There, more than 100 kids came out to get the experience of a lifetime.

The day started with youth hockey players from the surrounding south shore area arriving for a fun-filled day of ice hockey drills. Before the kids entered into the arena, they were able to participate in many interactive games and had a chance to meet MacDonald and Campoli. Once the program started, Campoli and MacDonald were on ice running various drills with the participants.

"This is my first event in the Long Island community,” said MacDonald, following the event. “I had a great time working with the goalies today."

Later in the week, MacDonald continued his tour of the Island with stops at Red Robin School and Day Camp in Westbury, Project Play in Huntington, Hofstra Summer Camp, Suffolk County PBA Picnic at South Haven County Park, Hoyt Farm Preserve in Commack, and the Islanders Team Store at the Broadway Mall in Hicksville.

“I had a great time on Long Island this week," said MacDonald. "It is important for our team to be out in the community trying to create new fans. It was a lot of fun introducing the game of hockey to some of the kids that we visited throughout the course of the week. I expect to see everyone during the season at a game. Enjoy the rest of the summer and I look forward to seeing everyone once training camp opens.”
