Well here we go. This one has been talked up a decent amount. Two big points on the line, as well as some territorial bragging rights. Evgeni Nabokov and Henrik Lundqvist in goal. Here's the game preview
if you haven't checked it out yet.
Heather Kreuzman finishes the Star-Spangled Banner, and this building is officially louder than it's been all season.1st Period
1:18: After what felt like six minutes of play inside the Rangers zone, icing is called. Faceoff to Lundqvist's left.
4:55: Casey Cizikas with what could be referred to as a "hustle play" off the draw to get a shot or two on Lundqvist. But we're still scoreless. Shots: NYI 4 NYR 2.
9:19: Brad Richards blasts one from the point that Nabokov absorbs, but didn't look too sure he had. First faceoff in a while. Shots: NYI 5 NYR 3.
10:36: Isles get another shot through traffic courtesy of Lubomir Visnovsky, but Lundqvist gets in the way. He's made a couple saves through a crowd tonight.
12:14: Colin McDonald lays a hit on Steve Eminger at the Rangers blue line and chaos ensues. All five guys on each team gather in the corner of the NYR zone to exchange pleasantries. After the dust settles, McDonald gets two for elbowing and Arron Asham goes away for roughing. 4-on-4 for the next two minutes.
15:26: Henrik makes an entry for save of the year on Matt Moulson's rebound. Thomas Hickey's shot from the point wound up right in the slot and Lundqvist just got the glove up for the second shot. Still scoreless.
End 1st: NYI 0 NYR 0. Shots: NYI 10 NYR 8.2nd Period
4:14: Nabokov with a solid save on Carl Hagelin's wraparound to keep it tied. Shots: NYI 12 NYR 11.
4:59: We're getting a penalty. Mark Streit goes for tripping, leading to the Rangers first power play.
5:32: Rangers thought they scored on a deflection. They're reviewing it now, and it clearly hits the post after sneaking through Nabokov's pads. It would have been Derek Stepan's goal, but instead it's 0-0.
7:32: Streit sprints out of the box and we're full strength again. Isles just had an opportunity from Michael Grabner and Frans Nielsen right at the end of the minor, but Lundqvist and the Rangers D kept it out.
9:15: Another Rangers power play upcoming. Tavares called for roughing. Rangers are 0-for-1 on the PP.
11:15: Tavares springs out of the box and re-joins the team. Shots: NYI 16 NYR 13.
12:22: With a delayed penalty, Lundqvist gloves a Streit slapper from up top. It's Ryan McDonagh for interference after a lot of O-zone time for the Islanders.
14:22: McDonagh back on, and he makes a beeline for the bench. Back to 5-on-5. Isles are 0-for-1 on the PP (Rangers are 0-for-2).
15:42: Thomas Hickey makes a great diving play to break up a 2-on-1 before it could really be a threat.
17:09: May have been an Islanders goal down there at the other end. I'd be surprised if they don't review this one the next time the whistle blows. The sellout crowd of 16,170 at the Coliseum definitely seemed to think so.
19:29: Moulson feed to Brad Boyes down low during a Rangers line change, but Boyes can't connect on it, and we're still tied. Shots: NYI 22 NYR 15.
19:53: Taking a look at the shot from 17:09 - nope. Nice save by the left goal post.
End 2nd: NYI 0 NYR 0. Shots: NYI 22 NYR 15.3rd Period
2:11: Hard hit by Matt Carkner behind the Islanders goal on Brian Boyle results in a holding penalty. NYR is 0-for-2 on the job so far.
4:11: Carkner skates out, and Isles have killed all three penalties so far. Shots: NYI 25 NYR 18.
4:57: Turnover by Lundqvist leads to a chance in front by Tavares, and then one on a spinaround by Moulson a second later. We're still looking for the game's first goal here.
7:20: Tavares on a surge down the right wing fires into the glove of the Rangers goalie.
10:28: After a really long delayed call, we finally get someone going to the box. It's Eminger for hooking. This is the second man advantage of the night for the home team (0-for-1 so far).
13:05: Stoppage in play. No shots on that previous power play. A couple of chances here and there, but more frustrating than not.
17:49: Another stoppage. There have been some long, extended stretches without a whistle. All in all, three posts have been hit (NYI-2, NYR-1), but somehow nothing has found the back of the net. Real entertaining hockey tonight in Uniondale. Shots: NYI 28 NYR 18.
19:00: Kyle Okposo didn't score on that breakaway, but after that, this gets foggy. Definitely some backchecking. And definitely some larceny from Lundqvist. Okposo with a great play to steal the puck from two Rangers. Now he goes to the box for slashing. If Isles want a point, they need to kill 60 seconds of this 4-on-5.
End 3rd: NYI 0 NYR 0. Shots: NYI 28 NYR 18. Let's play five more.Overtime
0:00: Still 1:00 remaining on Okposo's minor.
0:38: That was close. Nash threw one at the net from the corner that somehow stayed out after a bobble.
1:00: Okposo out of the box. Crowd gets going again. New York IslandersForwards
