7:00 p.m. - Madison Square Garden - New York, NY Pre-Game
Lots of line shuffling tonight for the Islanders. The lines are posted below. If you missed it, here's the morning skate feed from earlier.
John Amirante has us ready to go with a solid rendition of the National Anthem. Let's drop the puck.1st Period
0:01: And Islanders vs. Rangers version 242 is under way.
3:36 Deflection off a shot from Dan girardi in the right circle has the Rangers up 1-0.
Carl Hagelin set the play up with a pass from behind the goal line. Definitely went off an Islander on the way in.
5:25: Eric Boulton and Arron Asham go at it in the Rangers zone. That's one of the more spirited bouts I've seen in a while. Lost count of how many solid shots each fighter landed when they each reached 10 or so.
11:14: TV Timeout. Still 1-0 Rangers. Shots: NYI 0 NYR 6
11:28: Nabokov stops the first attempt by Brad Richards, and the second one by Marian Gaborik on the trailer, but not the third by Gaborik. Rangers lead 2-0
on Gaborik's seventh of the season.
13:58: Martin Biron makes his first save of the day on a Matt Martin wrist shot on the breakaway.
17:32: After taking an icing call, the Rangers use their timeout. Islanders have the last four shots on goal after allowing the first 10 of the game.
End 1st: Rangers 2 Islanders 0. Shots: NYI 6 NYR 11.2nd Period
0:29: Casey Cizikas intercepts the puck in the Rangers zone and feeds Colin McDonald for a one-timer just outside the crease to make it 2-1.
4:33: With the Rangers 1:30 into a power play, Frans Nielsen gets whistled for a faceoff violation, so we'll see 5-on-3 for 30 seconds
5:10: Just as the first minor expires, we get a stoppage in play. That will help the Islanders reset a bit. More of first penalty kill was spent in the Rangers zone.
6:45: Just as the second minor expires, John Tavares skates in on a 2-on-1 with Cizikas and wrists one off Biron's glove and in. It's tied 2-2.
Islanders looked good during the 3:30 they were shorthanded.
7:25: 40 seconds later, Islanders take their first lead of the night courtesy of Brad Boyes. Lubomir Visnovsky entered the zone and fed Boyes on the right side, who netted his fourth of the season. 3-2 Islanders.
8:52: Biron gets a sarcastic round of applause from the home crowd for a rather pedestrian save from distance
9:43: Brian Strait not in agreement with the ref as he gets called for interference on Marian Gaborik.
11:14: Rangers look to have tied this one up at 3-3
on Hagelin's goal, but this one is going to replay. I don't see any reason this one won't stand. Nabokov's mask came off, but well after the puck crossed the goal line. Will be a power play marker.
11:14: Goal. It's Hagelin's fifth, from Gaborik and Marc Staal.
14:45: Tavares draws an interference penalty on Hagelin right in front of Biron. Islanders will go back to the power play. Shots: NYI 17 NYR 22.
16:41: This power play is not going to be fruitful. Isles unable to sustain any pressure in the attacking zone.
End 2nd: Islanders 3 Rangers 3. Islanders side feeling much better than they were 20 minutes ago. Shots: NYI 20 NYR 233rd Period
2:14: Brian Boyle slow to get up in the corner to Nabokov's right, and Joe Finley is going off for hi-sticking. Looked to be incidental as Boyle made the hit on the Islanders defenseman.
4:14: Nothing doing for the Rangers on that man advantage. The Islanders have allowed one PPG tonight, but my guess is if this continues, the Isles room will be pleased with the performance of the PK units.
6:58: Both teams have seen a couple of chances in this period, but it's still tied at 3-3. Shots: NYI 23 NYR 29.
12:45: Still no goals yet in the third. Shots: NYI 25 NYR 31
14:43: Best scoring chance of the period, and the biggest save too. Tavares had one near his wheelhouse on a one-timer, but Biron slid across and made the save, stopping play.
17:21: Extended Rangers attack with a few scoring chances. But the Islanders block a couple shots in front, and Nabokov makes a skate save on a third attempt by Gaborik, and we're still tied. Icing called on the Islanders at the end of a shift, and Capuano calls timeout.
End 3rd: Islanders 3 Rangers 3. Shots: NYI 27 NYR 35Overtime
2:10: Oh wow have the Isles had some chances. Lots of attack time. Latest scoring chance was a rebound opportunity by Tavares. Fans love Biron again.
End OT: So many chances for each team, the whole frame was a highlight video. Big saves down the stretch by Nabokov and Biron. Islanders see first shootout of 2012-13. Have to think Frans Nielsen and Brad Boyes will be up early in the rotation - they're two of the best in the history of the breakaway competition.
