Islanders have beaten 13 of the 14 other Eastern Conference teams at least once this season. This is the one they haven't. First (and only) meeting in Carolina, after two previous matchups at the Coliseum.1st Period
3:57: Carolina gets an early one, and it's 1-0 Canes.
Alex Semin with a wrister from a hard angle. Canes took a 3-on-2 rush. I think it was intended to be a pass across the slot, but it went off a defenseman's stick and beat Nabokov five-hole.
4:40: Keith Aucoin makes a steal at the Hurricanes line and breaks in unobstructed. He wrists it up high past Dan Ellis, off the cross-bar and back out.
6:04: Isles tie it at 1-1
. Mark Streit puts it into the slot from the right side, and it changed direction off Brad Boyes and in. Goal is under review for a kick, so we're still awaiting a decision.
6:04: After review, they uphold the goal. 10th of the year for Boyes.
16:20: A little floater from the point gets through to give Carolina a 2-1 lead.
Jordan Staal makes a great deflection on Jay Harrison's shot to put it over Evgeni Nabokov's glove. 10th of the season for Jordan Staal.
End 1st: CAR 2 NYI 1. Shots: NYI 11 CAR 10.Elsewhere, Washington leads Winnipeg 1-0 as the first period nears an end. A Capitals win means good things for the Islanders playoff chances. VIEW STANDINGS2nd Period
4:37: Matt Moulson with the Islanders best chance of the middle period so far on a nifty play in the slot. Pad save by Ellis though.
7:34: Josh Bailey ties this thing at 2-2.
Kyle Okposo kept the puck in the zone and made a nice fake to generate a shot on goal. Ellis made the initial save, and the rebound went outside for an unchecked Bailey, who roofed it.
9:48: Jesse Joensuu unable to connect on a chance in front. Game remains tied at 2-2.Winnipeg, who trailed 2-0 after 20 minutes of play in Washington, got one back 16 seconds into the second period from Evander Kane to make it 2-1.
12:12: Nabokov with a sliding save that I'd file under "ridiculous" on Eric Staal, who one-timed an east-west feed from Semin.
15:56: Brian Strait with a blast from the top of the zone, but Ellis saw it through minimal traffic.
17:45: Patrick Dwyer gives the Canes another lead; 3-2.
Tuomo Ruutu made a play from behind the net for Jordan Staal, who I don't think saw it coming. The puck deflected off his skates and out wide to Dwyer, who was coming in hard off a line change and teed it up for the go-ahead tally.
End 2nd: CAR 3 NYI 2. Shots: NYI 25 CAR 20. Blake Wheeler ties it for Winnipeg at 14:11 of the second period, but it's short-lived. Alex Ovechkin puts the Caps back up, 3-2, just 37 seconds later with his 31st of the season.Mathieu Perrault gives Washington a 4-2 lead later in the second, and that's the score for those teams with one period remaining. Isles need a combination of three points from Winnipeg and themselves. With a Winnipeg regulation loss, the Isles could clinch a playoff spot with just one point tonight.3rd Period
2:49: Semin goes to the box for interference on Matt Moulson. Isles are 0-for-1 tonight on the PP.
6:54: Pretty good pressure there by the Joensuu-Cizikas-Martin line, but nothing goes in. Isles still trail 3-2.
8:27: Nabokov misplays one behind the goal, and sets up Ruutu in front with a wide open net. Unfortunately for the Canes forward, he hits the post. I had that one of the board already. Still 3-2 Carolina somehow.
12:05: Aucoin has been visible tonight, to say the least. Another chance on goal, but Ellis covers up and keeps the Hurricanes lead in tact.
18:59: Okposo scores and this baby is tied. In between a line change. Moulson to Tavares on the left side, and he feeds the front of the net, where it goes in off some part of Okposo's gear. 3-3, folks.
If this goes to OT, and WSH holds on (they lead 4-2 with 8:28 remaining in regulation, Isles are playoff-bound.
End 3rd: NYI 3 CAR 3. BIG point. Shots: NYI 36 CAR 27.Nik Antropov scored for WPG at 11:50 of the third. It's 4-3 WSH.Overtime
2:07: Michael Grabner rings one off the post.
3:43: Great save by Ellis, who was moving side-to-side, on a Tavares wrist shot. We're still playing hockey tonight.
End Overtime: NYI 3 CAR 3. We're headed to the skills competition. Still 4-3 in Washington, with four minutes to play.
