Viks four-goals vs. NYR leads to NHL history
The Islanders Viktor Kozlov has been named the NHLs First Star of the Week, for the period ending on December 3. This past week, Kozlov led the Islanders with six goals and two assists for eight points in four games.
"Its a nice honor," said Kozlov of the NHLs weekly award. "More importantly, I helped my team win this weekend."
Kozlovs six goals came on two consecutive nights on the road with two coming on December 2 at Pittsburgh and four coming on December 3 at the NY Rangers. Kozlov now joins the likes of NHL legends Wayne Gretzky, Darryl Sittler, and Stan Mikita. According to Bob Waterman of the Elias Sports Bureau, Kozlov became the fifth player in NHL history to record six goals during games on the road on consecutive nights. Red Berenson also did it, but his six goals came on one night on the road.
Kozlovs production couldnt have come at a better time for the Islanders. His eight point outburst this week coincides with the loss of team-leading scorer Alexei Yashin for four-to-six weeks with a sprained knee. Coincidently, the last Islander to score four goals was Yashin, who did it on March 25, 2003 at Chicago. Four goals is a career-high for Kozlov, who now has two career hat tricks.
A veteran of 12 NHL seasons, Kozlov has now played in 694 games and has recorded 155 goals and 256 assists for 411 points.
