Nominee 1: Matt Martin
—the NHL’s most prolific hitter—is looking for his second straight “Hit of the Year” title. Martin led the NHL with 382 hits this season, breaking his record of 374 set in 2011–12. Martin has led the league in bodychecks four consecutive seasons, including this big hit on Troy Brouwer in Game Six against the Washington Capitals. Nominee 2: Travis Hamonic
set personal bests in multiple categories offensively, but also led all Islanders defensemen with 213 hits. The Manitoba farm boy plays a rough-and-tumble game, as Buffalo’s Cody Hodgson found out. Nominee 3: Johnny Boychuk
plays a throwback-style game, meaning he has a big shot and throws his weight around. Boychuk became a fan favorite in his first season with the Islanders and is nominated for his crushing check on Colorado’s Maxime Talbot in October.
