#IslesAwards: Goal of the Year

by Staff Writer / New York Islanders
The Islanders were one of the NHL’s highest-scoring teams this season, scoring 2.99 goals-per-game, the fourth-highest total in the league. This year’s highlight reel was stacked, with bardown slap shots, unbelievable dekes and OT winners.

NewYorkIslanders.com sifted through this season’s goals and narrowed it down to the top three. Now we want you to vote for the 2014–15 Goal of the Year. Watch and place your vote today!

Nominee 1: Mikhail Grabovski vs. NY Rangers (1/27/15)
This goal isn’t about Grabovski’s tap-in at the top of the crease, but rather the gorgeous set up. The Islanders confound the Rangers with four tape-to-tape passes, culminating with Grabovski’s redirection past Henrik Lundqvist. It’s a shame the NHL couldn’t add a third assist for John Tavares getting this play started.

Nominee 2: Nick Leddy at Nashville (3/5/15)
Nick Leddy set a career-high with 10 goals this season, including this shot past one of the premier goalies in the NHL, Pekka Rinne. What else makes this goal special? Check out Frans Nielsen’s perfect cross-zone feed to find Leddy pinching off the blueline. A fantastic pass plus a great shot—not even Rinne is stopping that.

Nominee 3: John Tavares at Toronto (3/9/15)
John Tavares’ stickhandling, ability to get to the net and his ability rise to the occasion are just part of what makes him an elite player—all of which was on display in this OT winner against the Leafs. Tavares takes the puck at center, skates through three Leafs to get to the slot, outwaits Jonathan Bernier and caps an Isles comeback with the game-winning goal.
