Simon Holmstrom

Islanders prospect Simon Holmstrom has been selected to attend Sweden's World Junior Championship (WJC) camp, as announced on Thursday morning.

The Islanders' 2019 first rounder (23rd overall) was previously named to

at the end of October. Holmstrom, who spent last season playing for the Isles' AHL affiliate the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, was loaned from Bridgeport to HC Vita Hasten in Sweden's HockeyAllsvenskan on Aug. 28.

Holmstrom left Vita Hasten on Nov. 24 to prepare for WJC and the upcoming season in North America. He finished his stint with Vita Hasten with two points (1G, 1A) and two PIMs through 11 games.
If Holmstrom makes the team, this will be his first appearance at World Juniors, but not his first time representing his home country; Holmstrom suited up for his nation at the 2019 under-18s.
This year's WJC is slated to take place at Edmonton's Rogers Place without fans. The tournament will begin on December 25, 2020 and close with the gold medal game scheduled for January 5, 2021.
