The New York Islanders placed Steve Bernier and Stephen Gionta on waivers on Monday afternoon.
Bernier, an 11-year NHL veteran, and Gionta, who has played 296 NHL games, will both be assigned to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League if not claimed by noon on Tuesday.
UPDATE: Bernier and Gionta cleared waivers and were loaned to Bridgeport.
The Islanders also returned defenseman Devon Toews on loan to the Sound Tigers on Monday. The team's 23-man roster is due Tuesday afternoon.
