by Cory Wright / New York Islanders

The 2015 IIHF World Championships are ongoing in the Czech Republic, with three Islanders representing their countries on the world stage.

Brock Nelson and Anders Lee are donning the red, white and blue for Team USA, while Nikolay Kulemin is suiting up for his native Russia. Team USA went 5-1-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) in seven round-robin games, finishing atop Group B and will play Switzerland in quarterfinal action on Thursday May 14 at 9:15 a.m. eastern time. Russia is 4-1-1-1 and plays Sweden in quarterfinal action.

Nelson is off to a spectacular start in his first Worlds appearance, scoring nine points (six goals, three assists) in seven games, while hitting the scoresheet in the first six contests. The Islanders center leads Team USA in points.

Nelson had goals in five straight games, including two in a 3-1 win over Slovenia on May 10. Nelson opened the tournament with two assists in USA’s 5-1 win over Finland, the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over Norway and hooked up with Lee for an empty-netter in the 4-2 win over Kulemin and Russia. Nelson had another goal in USA’s 5-2 loss to Belarus on May 7 and netted the game's only goal in a 1-0 win over Denmark on May 8.

Nelson was held pointless in USA's 5-4 OTW over Slovakia on May 12, but Lee notched a goal and an assist, giving him three points overall in the tournament.

Kulemin has a goal and four assists in six round-robin games. The Islanders winger scored Russia’s second goal in a 5-3 win over Slovenia and potted an assist in a 5-2 win over Denmark, a 7-0 win over Belarus, a 3-2 overtime win over Slovakia and a 3-2 shootout loss to Finland. Kulemin did not play in Russia’s 6-2 win over Norway.

The elimination rounds begin with the quarterfinals on May 14. The semi-finals are scheduled for May 16, while the Gold and Bronze Medal Games are scheduled for May 17.
