The men and women of the Nassau County Police Department are aware of the risks and perilous activity that stand in their way on a daily basis, yet it doesn’t stop them from risking their lives to protect the well-being of those around them. Specifically for Wantagh officer Michael Califano, that statement proved true. Having been involved in the Nassau Police department for twelve years, Califano diligently worked under any circumstance to ensure the protection of the people of Nassau County.
Sadly on February 4, 2011, while conducting a routine vehicle and traffic law stop along the Long Island Expressway, Califano’s car was struck from behind by a flatbed truck. He passed away the following morning.
On Sunday, March 6th, the Islanders will honor Officer Califano and the beautiful legacy left behind in his wife and three sons, who only attest to the strength and determination he proved in his line of work; risking his life for those around him.
The New York Islanders dedicate their game against the New Jersey Devils to the incredible efforts of Officer Califano, as well as the foundation set up in his honor. A portion of the proceeds raised from the games’ ticket purchases will be donated to the Califano Foundation.
At 11:45 a.m. fans can show support by coming out to see the Nassau County PBA take on the Nassau County Sheriff’s Department on Coliseum ice as they pay tribute to one of their own.
