Islanders Tee Off for Kids at Golf Outing

The New York Islanders raised $240K for the Islanders Children's Foundation on Tuesday just by playing a little golf.
The Islanders hosted the 11th Annual Islanders Children's Foundation Golf Outing, the annual scramble golf tournament, with players, coaches and staff playing alongside fans at Bethpage Red and Blue.
"It's the combo of money going towards a good cause but also still getting to have fun and play golf," said Josh Bailey. "You see a lot of the same faces every year and meet some new people. All in all, just a good day and I think we all enjoy it."

Golf is the unofficial offseason sport of most hockey players and the Isles are no exception. Bailey gets out about once a week when he's not taking care of his two boys while Scott Mayfield belongs to a golf club in Colorado.

(An aside: Mayfield lamented the heavy humid air on Tuesday afternoon after his approach fell just short of the 16th green. "That would have been alright in Denver," he joked referencing the thinner air in the Mile High City.)
Jordan Eberle, who can be found tweeting about Tiger Woods on Sundays, is thought to be one of the team's better golfers, but all pale in comparison to Cal Clutterbuck, the team's resident golf pro.
"Clutter is in a league of his own," Eberle said.
The Islanders version of Tiger vs Phil may have to wait until next year, but the event still managed to raise a new high for the ICF at the golf outing. In addition to the drives, chips and putts, the Isles also held a series of fundraisers including a live and silent auction.

"These events are always great because it raises a lot of money, raises some awareness and all the money goes to really great causes," Head Coach Barry Trotz said. "First time here, but what a fantastic golf course and a first-class event."
The golf outing marks the unofficial end of summer for the Islanders, who were all back in the same place for the first time since April. When practices start again on Friday, there won't be much time to golf and the focus will shift back to the ice.
"This is always a fun time of the year," Eberle said. "You try and keep in touch in the summer, but guys are in their own places doing their own thing. It's nice to see everyone again, we've been back for about a week now and skating together to get ready. Around this time you kind of get anxious for the start of the season."
