Eric Burchard teaches 5th grade at Jericho Elementary School in Centereach, New York. Read more about how Future Goals fits seamlessly into his curriculum.

Why did you decide to become a teacher?
Having two younger brothers, working with kids was inevitable. I found that I could also be a role model for them at times or a coach on their sport teams. This made their choice for a future pretty easy.
What is your favorite part of teaching?
Since I teach 5th grade, the kids move to Middle School for 6th. I always enjoy seeing them at school functions, when I get a sibling in my class, or when they return just to say "HI"!

Community Stars of the Week
I like the way it is set up perfectly for my 5th graders. The content works with our curriculum, the instructions are easy to follow and the activities are challenging enough for all students. Also, it allows the kids to work at their own pace!
What was your student's reaction to your course?
The first reaction was excitement since the students love to be involved in STEM activities. They also liked that the activities would be sport related and would involve "new" activities for them.
Who is your favorite NHL® player and why?
Tough question...I would have to say Matt Martin because of the role that he plays in energizing the crowd and the players with big hits. He also has shown a grittiness in going to the tough areas of the rink. Most importantly the way he protects and supports his teammates whenever they are in need.
If you played hockey, would you rather be the goalie or a goal scorer? Why?
Goal Scorer all day! The challenge of finding different ways to get around defenses and a goalie would make every opportunity unique.
How else are you involved in your local community?
I have run a 5th grade St. Baldrick's event for about 18 years.
