Islanders & TD Bank Honor Life-Saving Five-Year-Old as November Hometown Hero

Five-year-old Jillian Given of Ronkonkoma proved that no matter your age, you can still be a life-saver. In September, Jillian saved her mother’s life after she went into a diabetic shock. For saving her mom, the Islanders and TD Bank honored Jillian as the Hometown Hero of November.

Jillian’s mom, Elizabeth, wears an insulin pump and accidentally received too much insulin one evening. Elizabeth attempted to get out of bed but passed out and fell on the floor.

The quick-thinking Jillian reacted instinctively and performed exactly as her mom taught her to in the event of an emergency.

“I just taught her what to do over the past year or two,” Elizabeth said.  “She’s really good with numbers and remembered 911 and how to how to call.  It’s amazing.”

At the Islanders home game on Saturday, Nov. 30, Eric Fishon, VP of Suburban New York Marketing at TD Bank honored Jillian and her mother. In addition to being recognized on the scoreboard, Jillian received a trophy from TD Bank.

When asked whether the award would stand proudly in her room, Jillian had no doubt. “Yes,” she stated emphatically.

“The Hometown Hero program gives us the opportunity to recognize people in the community for the heroic work that they do,” Fishon said. “That’s why we initiated this program with the Islanders. They are our hometown heroes, regular people doing really great things and tonight is the definition of that.”
