The Islanders have selected right winger Kyle Okposo with the seventh overall selection at the 2006 NHL Entry draft in Vancouver.
Okposo tallied 27 goals, 31 assists and 58 points in 50 games during the 2005-2006 season with Des Moines of the USHL.
The University of Minnesota prospect is a steady two-way forward. Okposo can produce on the power play and contribute shorthanded as well. He'll be a nice addition to the Islanders' specialty team units.
"Kyle is a big, strong guy who runs over people," said GM Neil Smith. "Islanders fans will be excited to see him play. We had him very high on our list."
Okposo is a powerful skater who is dangerous coming out of the corners.
He takes hits well and dishes them out just as effectively. He plays hard and stickhandles well in traffic. His hard-nosed, no-quit style is complemented by his soft hands.
Okposo is not afraid to sacrifice his body to block a shot. His intelligence makes his game effective at both ends of the ice.
"Kyle has a certain edge to his game," said head coach Ted Nolan. "He drives to the net well. He's a big kid, and we're very excited to get him."
A hard-working talent is what can be expected by Islanders fans from this young phenom.
Stay tuned for more as the draft continues in Vancouver.
