Islanders Sign Two Prospects

The Islanders have signed forward Justin DiBenedetto and defenseman Mark Katic to three-year entry level contracts. DiBenedetto finished third in the OHL this season in both goals with 45 and points with 93. Katic finished eighth among OHL defenseman with 41 assists for 54 points.

Both players will report to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League for the remainder of the season on an Amateur Tryout.

DiBenedetto was selected by the Islanders in sixth round, 175th overall, of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. The 20-year old native of Etobicoke, ON also recorded 48 assists this season for his second consecutive 93 point season. In his five-year OHL career—split between the Toronto St. Michael's Majors and Sarnia—DiBenedetto played in 303 games and scored 132 goals with 156 assists for 288 points.

He also appeared in 31 playoff games over five post-season and scored six goals with 11 assists for 17 points.

Katic was the Islanders first selection, 62nd overall in the third round, in 2007 NHL Entry Draft. The 19-year old native of Timmins, ON set new career-highs in goals with 13, assists and points this season while playing for the Sarnia Sting of the OHL. In his four year junior career—all with Sarnia—Katic scored 28 goals with 131 assists for 159 points in 227 games.

He also appeared in 14 playoff games over three post-seasons and scored two goals with six assists for eight points.
