Islanders Sign Mayfield

The New York Islanders have signed defenseman Scott Mayfield to a seven-year contract.

Mayfield, 30, set career-highs in goals (6), assists (18) and points (24) last season with the Islanders. He led the team in total time-on-ice (1724:22) and shorthanded time-on-ice (220:58), while finishing second on the team in average ice-time per game (21:02). He led the team with 168 blocked shots, which placed 10th overall in the NHL.

A native of St. Louis, MO, Mayfield scored three points (one goal, two assists) in six Stanley Cup Playoff games last season, finishing second amongst Islanders defensemen in scoring.

The Islanders selected Mayfield in the second round (34th overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft. In 428 regular-season games with the Islanders, he's scored 111 points (25 goals, 86 assists). Over the past three seasons, he has led the Islanders in shorthanded time-on-ice, averaging 2:28 per game. Mayfield also has 16 points (four goals, 12 assists) in 57 career playoff games. He played 223 American Hockey League games with the Islanders' American Hockey League affiliate in Bridgeport, totaling 12 goals, 38 assists and 411 penalty minutes.

Prior to his professional career, Mayfield attended the University of Denver, where he scored 29 points (seven goals, 22 assists) and collected 192 penalty minutes in 81 games over two seasons. Mayfield also played two seasons with the Youngstown Phantoms of the United States Hockey League. In 111 career USHL games, Mayfield totaled 38 points (17 goals, 21 assists) and 304 penalty minutes.
