Islanders prospects three stars of the week

by Cory Wright / New York Islanders

3rd Star - Kirill Kabanov
Kabanov continued his steady production with four points last week. The Russian winger dished out three assists in Shawinigan’s 8-2 win over Cape Breton on Thursday. Kabanov contributed a goal in Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Halifax and was held off the score sheet in Sunday’s 6-0 rout of Moncton. Kabanov’s 46 points (19g/27a) in 43 games shatters his 28 points (11g/17a) from last season with Lewiston.

2nd Star - Brock Nelson
North Dakota’s point’s leader was at it again in a weekend series against Denver. Nelson had an assist in Friday’s 4-3 win and scored two of ND’s three goals in Saturday’s 5-3 loss. The three-point weekend brings Nelson’s totals up to 22 goals and 16 assists (38 points), good enough for number one on North Dakota and 9th in the WCHA.

1st Star - Scott Mayfield
Opposite Nelson’s Fighting Sioux, Mayfield scored the game-winner for Denver in Saturday’s 5-3 win. The rookie defenseman has three goals and six assists for the Pioneers and the team is 8-1 when Mayfield records a point. The Islanders second round pick in 2011 was named the WCHA Red Baron Rookie of the Week on Feb. 14.
