Islanders prospects three stars of the week

by Cory Wright / New York Islanders

Third Star – Rhett Rakhshani
Bridgeport has won seven straight games to start 2012, trumping their previous season high of four. Rhett Rakhshani’s eight-game point streak may have something to do with that. The Sound Tigers standout scored five points (3g/2a) in three games last week, leading the way past Manchester on Friday with two goals and an assist en route to a 4-2 win. The right winger assisted on Matt Donovan’s goal Saturday against Providence and netted his ninth goal of the season Sunday against Binghamton. The Sound Tigers won both games 3-2.

Second Star – Brenden Kichton
Another week, another offensive explosion for Isles defensive prospect Brenden Kichton. The Spokane Chief scored six points (1g/5a) in three games and has ten points (1g/9a) in his last six games. The fourth-year WHL defenseman is scoring more than a point-per-game and is leading all WHL d-men with 43 points (7g/36a) in 40 games. Spokane won two of three games this weekend by a combined score of 11-4. Kichton was a major factor, posting multi-point efforts to propel the Chiefs over Everett 6-1 on Wednesday and Tri-City 5-3 on Saturday.

First Star – Matt Donovan
Donovan played a large role in Rakhshani’s and Bridgeport’s big week. Donovan assisted on Rakhshani’s first goal on Friday and had the secondary assist on Tyler McNeely’s game-winning goal. The Edmond, OK, native buried a feed from Rakhshani on Saturday and notched two assists Sunday, including one on the game-winner. He is posting big numbers from the blue line, as his 22 points (4g/18a) are good for second on the team. Donovan is tenth among defenseman in the AHL and second among rookie d-men in scoring. Currently, Donovan is riding a five-game point streak.
