Islanders prospects three stars of the week

by Cory Wright / New York Islanders
Each Monday, will feature three top performances from the deep pool of Islanders prospects.

3. Brock Nelson -
Nelson continues to put up points with a strong exhibition performance last week against the Russian Red Stars. The University of North Dakota beat the Red Stars 5-1 as Nelson contributed a goal and an assist. He was named the game’s third star and also picked up two penalty minutes for tripping. Since the game was exhibition, Nelson finds himself in the third star slot this week. He has 22 points (14g/8a) in 18 NCAA games this season.

2. John Persson -
Persson added two points to his scoring lead on the Red Deer Rebels last week as his team finished with two wins and one loss. The Rebels beat the Regina Pats 2-1 on Saturday and Persson had the primary assist on the game-winning-goal. He didn’t record a tally in the team’s 4-2 win over Kootenay, but did score his 13th goal of the year in a 5-2 loss to Medicine Hat. Persson stands second on the team in goals, but his 36 points lead the way for Red Deer.

1. Kirill Kabanov - The Shawinigan Cataractes dominated their competition last week, winning all three of their games as Kabanov played an important role for the Quebec team. The Moscow native pocketed two assists in a 7-0 routing of Rouyn-Noranda and recorded a helper in a 3-1 win over Val-d’Or. Kabanov was held off the score-sheet in the Cataractes 4-1 win over Gatineau, but his valued playmaking in an undefeated week propels him to the number one spot. Kabanov’s three points brought his totals to 13 goals and 13 assists in 21 games.
