KHL PLAYOFFS - SOROKIN COMPETING FOR GAGARIN CUP



Ilya Sorokin and CSKA Moscow are in the KHL Finals. 

Sorokin and CSKA got to the finals quickly, going 12-1 through the first three rounds of the playoffs. Sorokin was spectacular, only allowing 16 goals over the 13-game span, recording a 1.16 goals-against average, a .952 save percentage and three shutouts. 

CSKA takes on Metallurg Magnitogorsk for the Gagarin Cup, with the series starting on Thursday night. Metallurg is the second seed in the KHL’s Eastern Conference and is 12-4- in the postseason.

CHL PLAYOFFS - BARZAL, BEAUVILLIER, DAL COLLE, HO-SANG ADVANCE

Four Islanders prospects – Mathew Barzal, Anthony Beauvillier, Michael Dal Colle and Joshua Ho-Sang – have advanced to the second round of the CHL playoffs. 

DAL COLLE, HO-SANG MEET IN SECOND ROUND

Michael Dal Colle and Joshua Ho-Sang will meet in the second round of the Ontario Hockey League playoffs for the second straight season.

Dal Colle, Ho-Sang and their respective teams both advanced to the second round of the OHL playoffs, with Dal Colle’s Kingstron Frontenacs downing the Oshawa Generals in five games, while Ho-Sang’s Niagara Icedogs defeated the Ottawa 67’s, also in five games. 

Mitchell Vande Sompel – the Islanders’ 2015 third-round pick and Oshawa Generals’ defenseman – was eliminated in the first round by Dal Colle and the Frontenacs. 

Dal Colle is second in playoff scoring with 14 points (3G, 11A) in five games, while Ho-Sang is tied for sixth with 11 points (2G, 9A). Dal Colle had four assists in the Frontenac’s 6-0 clinching win in Game 5. 

Last season, Dal Colle (then with the Oshawa Generals) beat Ho-Sang and the Icedogs in five games. 

BARZAL, THUNDERBIRDS SWEEP COUGARS

Barzal and the Seattle Thunderbirds swept their series 4-0 with the Prince George Cougars in the first round of the Western Hockey League playoffs. The Islanders’ 2015 first-round pick recorded seven assists in the four-game sweep. 

The Thunderbirds will face the Everett Silvertips in the second round, beginning on Friday night in Seattle.

BEAUVILLIER, CATARACTES BEAT SHERBROOKE

Beauvillier and the Shawinigan Cataractes beat the Sherbrooke Phoenix in five games in the first round of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoffs. 

The Cataractes won four straight games after dropping the series opener, with Beauvillier scoring five points (2G, 3A) in five games. Shawinigan plays the Charlottetown Islanders in the second round of the playoffs starting on Thursday night.

SOUND TIGERS GO 2-1; STAY IN PLAYOFF RACE

Bridgeport: 38-25-4-3, (83 points), T-4th in Atlantic Division, T-6th in Eastern Conference

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers earned four of a six possible points last week, staying in the Atlantic Division playoff hunt with six games to play in the regular season. 

Bridgeport opened the week with a pair of 5-2 wins over the Portland Pirates on Tuesday and the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins on Saturday, before falling 3-1 to the Springfield Falcons 3-1 at home on Sunday. 

Alan Quine was named the CCM/AHL Player of the Week last week, recording seven points (4G, 3A) in three games last week. Quine had a pair of three-point nights, scoring a hat trick in Saturday’s win, while recording three assists against the Pirates on Tuesday. Quine scored the lone goal in Bridgeport’s loss on Sunday. Mike Halmo had four points (2G, 2A) for the Sound Tigers last week. 

Bridgeport is back in action on Friday as visit the Hersey Bears and open a three games in three nights weekend.

MAVERICKS PREPARE FOR KELLY CUP PLAYOFFS

Missouri: 51-13-3-2, (107 points), 1st in Central Division, 1st in Western Conference, 1st in the ECHL

The ECHL regular season champion Missouri Mavericks enter their final week of regular season play this week after earning just two of a possible six points last week (1-2-0 ).

Last week, the Mavs opened the week with a 5-2 win over the Quad City Mallards on Wednesday before dropping a pair of 3-2 decisions with the Allen Americans on Friday and Saturday.

The week, Missouri will host their rivals, the Tulsa Oilers in their final regular-season home game before closing out the season with back-to-back road games at the Idaho Steelheads.

The Mavs are still the only ECHL team to top the 100 point mark this season.
