Islanders Prospect Report

by Dawn King / New York Islanders

Sorokin Named KHL Goalie of the Month

Ilya Sorokin was named the Kontinental Hockey League’s Goalie of the Month for January. Sorokin won seven out of eight starts for the KHL’s top team, CSKA Moscow. Sorokin, recorded three shutouts with a goals-against average 0.98 and a .968 save percentage.

The Russian-born goaltender is 17-6-4 this season with a 0.99 GAA and a .956SV%, tops among KHL goalies. The Islanders drafted Sorokin in the third round of the 2014 NHL Draft (78th overall).

Dal Colle Continues Spectacular Play in Kingston

Michael Dal Colle’s season has taken off since being traded from the Oshawa Generals to the Kingston Frontenacs. So it was fitting that Dal Colle had a three-point night (2G, 1A) against his former team, as the Frontenacs beat the Generals 5-4. The 2014 first-rounder (5th overall) tacked on another four points (2G, 2A) in Saturday’s 4-3 OT win over the Hamilton Bulldogs, finishing the week with seven points.

Since being traded to Kingston, Dal Colle has been unstoppable putting up 31pts (15G, 16A) in only 14 games. Comparatively, that’s six more points than he had in Oshawa, despite playing 16 fewer games.

Somerby Seals the Win for Terriers in the Beanpot

Boston University defenseman – and Islanders prospect – Doyle Somerby scored the insurance goal with 40.3 seconds left to seal a 3-1 BU victory over Northeastern in the first-round of the 2016 Beanpot. The Marblehead, Mass. Native, has 13 points (5G, 8A) in 27 games this season with the Terriers, but has caught fire of late, registering four points in his last four games. Somerby and the Terriers will take on archrivals Boston College in the Beanpot Championship on Monday night at TD Garden.

The Islanders drafted Somerby in the 5th round (125th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft.

Sound Tigers Back on Track, Extend Streak to Six Straight:

Bridgeport: 25-19-2-1, (53 points), 5th in Atlantic Division, 7th in Eastern Conference

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers are gaining momentum in the Eastern Conference as they extend their season-long winning streak to six games. Bracken Kearns recorded his first-career hat trick to boost the Sound Tigers over Lehigh Valley 6-3 on Friday.

On Saturday, the Sounds Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead and held on for a 3-2 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.  Christopher Gibson made 30 saves in the win.

The Sound Tigers will look to extend their season-long on Wednesday when they head to Hershey.

Mavericks Stay Atop the ECHL

Missouri: 35-5-2-1, (73 points), 1st in Central Division, 1st in Western Conference, 1st in the ECHL

The Missouri Mavericks picked up three of a possible four points last week to remain atop the ECHL.  The Mavericks opened this week with an overtime loss to their division rival, Tulsa Oilers on Wednesday, then followed it up with a 2-1 win over the Colorado Eagles on Saturday. If one team has the Mavs' number, it’s the rival Oilers, who have accounted for four of Missouri’s eight losses this season, including the Mavs loss back on Dec. 13 that ended their franchise record 14-game winning streak.

The Mavs will put their league best, 18-1-0-0 home record on the line as they open up an eight-game home stand starting with the South Carolina Stingrays on Tuesday.
