by Jonathan Velazquez / New York Islanders

Barzal, Beauvillier Make Team Canada

Mathew Barzal and Anthony Beauvillier will play for Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships in Finland.

The Islanders’ 2015 first-rounders both made the team as 18-year-olds, both on their first invitations from Hockey Canada. Barzal and Beauvillier both have international experience, skating in the Ivan Hlinka Tournament last year.

Barzal has 43 points (9G, 34A) in 24 games this season for the Western Hockey League’s Seattle Thunderbirds, while Beauvillier has 41 points (17G, 24A) in 21 games for the Quebec League’s Shawinigan Cataractes. Barzal and Beauvillier lead all Islanders’ junior prospects in points.

The Islanders’ prospects, along with their Canadian teammates, kick off the tournament on Dec. 26 against Team USA at 1 p.m. eastern time.

Vande Sompel, Ho-Sang Have Three-Point Weeks

Mitchell Vande Sompel posted his second straight three-point week. Vande Sompel scored three points (1G, 2A) in the Oshawa Generals 7-0 win over the Sudbury Wolves on Dec. 20. The Generals' blueliner has two goals and 13 assists in 20 games this season.

Joshua Ho-Sang scored a goal and two assists in two games last week, extending his point streak to three games. The Islanders' 2014 first-rounder has 43 points (11G, 32A) in 32 games this season.
