Islanders Prospect Report

by Sara Giles / New York Islanders

Barzal Has 10-Point Week

Mathew Barzal had a monster week, posting 10 points (1G, 9A) in three games for the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League. Barzal started the week with a five-assist night in a 7-2 win against the Brandon Wheat Kings. He added a goal and two assists in a 5-2 win over the Kootney Ice and ended the week with two assists in a 4-3 loss to the Calgary Hitmen. The 10-point week upped Barzal’s season total to 20 points (4G, 16A) in 10 games this season.

The 6’0, 187 lbs., Coquitlam, British Columbia native was the 16th overall pick in the 2015 National Hockey League Draft. Barzal has a point in all but two games this season and is one point shy of the team lead, despite playing in three fewer games. The Islanders prospect is tied for 16th in league scoring and was named the WHL's player of the week.

Sorokin Second in KHL Shutouts

Ilya Sorokin picked up his sixth win of the season last week, extending his hot start to the KHL season. Sorokin made 17 saves for CSKA (Moscow) in the win improving his record to 6-2-1 with a 1.08 goals-against average and a .953 save percentage. Furthermore, four of Sorokin’s six wins this season were shutouts. Sorokin ranks second in the KHL in shutouts, save percentage, and goals against average. The Islanders selected the 20-year-old goaltender 78th overall in the 2014 NHL draft.

Things Sound Good in Bridgeport

Bridgeport: 8-3-0, 16 pts., 2nd in Atlantic Division, 3rd in Eastern Conference

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers picked up four points in three games this weekend and now sit in second place in the Atlantic Division of the American Hockey League. The Sound Tigers started the week with a 5-1 loss to the Springfield Falcons on Wednesday, with Justin Vaive tallying the lone Bridgeport goal. The Sound Tigers bounced back on Friday with a 3-2 win over the Albany Devils and a 3-2 overtime victory   against the Utica Comets on Sunday night. Forward Alan Quine netted the game winner against Utica. Sunday Night’s game kicked off a five-game homestand for the Sound Tigers.

Forward Taylor Beck was recalled by the Islanders last week, while captain, John Tavares is out with an illness. Beck has seven points (3G, 4A) in 10 games with Bridgeport. Left wing Joe Whitney leads the Sound Tigers with 13 points (5G, 8A) in 11 games. Bracken Kearns paces Bridgeport with six goals while Alan Quine leads the team with eight assists.

Missouri Leads Eastern Conference

Missouri: 5-2-1, 11 pts., 1st in Central Division, 1st in Western Conference

The Missouri Mavericks picked up three points in three games last week, keeping them on top of the Western Conference in the ECHL. The Mavericks kicked off their week with a 5-2 win over the Quad City Mallards Tuesday, but fell to the Tulsa Oilers on Friday 4-3 in a shootout and 2-1 to the Allen Americans on Saturday.

Kellen Jones (1G, 3A), Jesse Root (1G, 1A), Tyler Barnes (1G, 2A) all had multiple points in the season-high five goal, 5-2 win over Quad City. Barnes (3G, 5A) and Root (5G, 3A) currently lead Missouri with eight points each in eight games.

The Mavericks look to stay in first place as they travel to take on the Quad City Mallards on Wednesday for the second time this season. The Mavericks face-off against the Wichita Thunder Saturday night on home ice for the third time this season.
