Williams Keeps Minnesota State at the Top


Goaltender Stephon Williams continued to piece together a stellar season for the No. 1-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks allowing only two goals in a pair of wins last weekend over the Ferris State Bulldogs. Williams stopped 24 shots in a 2-1 win Friday and 21 shots in a 3-1 win Saturday. The Fairbanks, Alaska native ranks fifth in the nation with a 1.70 goals against average and ranks second with 14 wins. The Islanders selected Williams with the 106th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft. Both Bulldogs goals against Williams came off the stick of Kyle Schempp, a New York Islanders 2014 draft pick.

Dal Colle, Ho-Sang Updates

Michael Dal Colle finished the week with three points (one goal, two assists) in three games for the Oshawa Generals and continues to lead the team with 61 points (26 goals, 35 assists) in 34 games. Joshua Ho-Sang recorded four points (one goal, three assists) in four games last week for the Niagara IceDogs and ranks third on the team with 29 points (six goals, 23 assists) despite playing 18 fewer games than the team’s top two scorers. Ho-Sang has 48 points (nine goals, 39 assists) in 35 games between the IceDogs and the Windsor Spitfires, where he started the 2014¬–15 season.

Bridgeport Sound Tigers Sign Matt Lashoff

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers signed defenseman Matt Lashoff on Monday, Jan. 12 adding depth to the blueline. Lashoff brings 74 games of NHL experience and eight AHL seasons of experience to the Sound Tigers. The East Greenbrush, NY, native spent the past three seasons playing in leagues in Switzerland, Sweden and Russia, most recently suiting up for Novokuznetsk Mettalburg of the KHL. The Boston Bruins selected Lashoff in the first round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

Bridgeport Sound Tigers:  19-16-4-1, 5th in Northeast Division, T-11th in Eastern Conference

On Thursday the AHL named Bridgeport Sound Tigers captain Aaron Ness to the roster for the 2015 AHL All-Star Classic. Ness replaces injured Sound Tigers defenseman Ryan Pulock. In three games last week, the Sound Tigers finished 1-2. Cory Conacher and Kael Moullierat scored while Scott Mayfield recorded two assists on Friday night, but the Providence Bruins managed to beat the Sound Tigers 3-2 in overtime. On Saturday the Sound Tigers surrendered six goals en route to a 6-2 defeat against the Syracuse Crunch. Justin Courtnall and John Persson scored in the loss. The Sound Tigers avenged the loss on Sunday afternoon as Kevin Poulin stopped 25 shots in a 2-1 win over the Crunch. Moullierat and Ness scored for the Sound Tigers.

Stockton Thunder: 13-25-1, 7th in Pacific Division, 13th in Western Conference

In the midst of two weeks off from playing, the Stockton Thunder traded forward Ryan Hayes to the Utah Grizzlies in exchange for forward Vinny Scarsella. Hayes joined the Thunder midway through the 2012–13 season and ranked sixth on the team at the time of last week’s trade with 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists) in 37 games played. Scarsella ranked fifth on the Grizzlies with 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) in 35 games. Before turning professional, Scarsella played with current Bridgeport Sound Tiger Cory Conacher at Canusius College.
