Reinhart, Pelech and Pokka Make Their Way to World Juniors


Three Islanders prospects will represent their countries at the upcoming World Junior Hockey Championships in Malmo, Sweden. Canadians Griffin Reinhart and Adam Pelech and Finland’s Ville Pokka were selected to play in the prestigious hockey tournament. Reinhart and Pokka are World Junior veterans, as this is the second tournament for both players. Canada begins play on Thursday, Dec. 26 against Germany, while Finland faces off against Norway the next day. Team USA opens their tournament Thursday against the Czech Republic.

American Hockey League: Bridgeport Sound Tigers (12-14-1-3), 4th in Northeast Division, 12th in Eastern Conference)

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers posted a winning weekend, going 2-1 over their last three games. Anders Nilsson stopped all 33 shots for his first shutout of the season as Sound Tigers blanked the Hartford Wolf Pack 3-0 on Friday night. Pierre-Marc Bouchard, Mike Halmo and Anders Lee scored for the Sound Tigers in the win. Halmo and Lee each scored power-play goals and the Sound Tigers penalty kill was a perfect 6-for-6… Nilsson followed up his shutout with a solid 25-save performance, but the Sound Tigers fell 2-1 to the Manchester Monarchs Saturday. Despite the loss, Scooter Vaughan had a night to remember, as he scored his first AHL goal… The Sound Tigers rebounded Sunday, beating the Albany Devils 4-3. Bridgeport’s power play was humming as the Sound Tigers scored three times with the man advantage. Dallas Jackson scored the winner with under a 1:30 to play in regulation, while John Persson, Alan Quine and Mike Halmo each lit the lamp for the Sound Tigers. Goaltender Kenny Reiter faced just 15 shots for his sixth win of the season.

ECHL: Stockton Thunder (14-9-0-4), 2nd in Pacific Division, 4th in Western Conference

This past weekend the Stockton Thunder took on the Ontario Reign for a three-game series. The Thunder opened the series with back-to-back 3-2 losses, but took the final game 5-1. On Friday, the Thunder and Reign decided their tilt in a lengthy, nine-round shootout with Jake Hauswirth scored the game-decider for the Reign. Landon Oslanski and Ben Rosen scored for the Thunder...  The Thunder fell in the rematch on Saturday, but Oslanski scored for the second consecutive game and Ryan Constant also lit the lamp… Sunday the Thunder defeated the Reign 5-1 in the weekend finale. Corey Trivino extended his point streak to six games (1g/9a), while goaltender Brian Foster made a season-high 42 saves. The Thunder opened the scoring with a goal from Captain Garet Hart while Joey Martin, Matt Bergland, Lee Baldwin all found the back of the net. Hunt’s 11th of the season held up as the game-winner.
