The prospect playoffs are in full swing

It's playoff season for the New York Islanders prospects. The Canadian juniors, NCAA Tournament and European leagues are all underway in their second season. Follow along the Islanders Prospect Report to keep tabs on the Isles prospects throughout their playoff runs. 

Barzal Named WHL Western Conference Player of the Year, First Round Playoff Match-up Against Wotherspoon Underway

Mathew Barzal was named the Western Hockey League's Western Conference Player of the Year for the 2016-17 season. In addition, Barzal was named a Western Conference First Team All-Star by the WHL for the second season in a row. Barzal posted 79 points in 41 games this season for the Seattle Thunderbirds.

The Seattle Thunderbirds are in the midst of a first round playoff match-up against Parker Wotherspoon and the Tri-City Americans. Barzal has not appeared in either of the first two games of the series as he is currently sidelined with an illness.

Seattle holds a 2-0 series lead as the Thunderbirds won both games this weekend to open the series. Wotherspoon, who has played in both match-ups, has not recorded any points in the series through the first two meetings.

Quenneville and Medicine Hat Lead Series, 2-0

David Quenneville and the Medicine Hat Tigers opened the first round of the playoffs with back-to-back wins against the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Quenneville was named the second star of the first game of the series, as he posted three assists in a 7-2 win for Medicine Hat. All three of the defenseman's assists came while on the power play, including Quenneville's assist on the game-winning goal.

Medicine Hat won Game 2 of the best-of-seven series, 5-3. Quenneville recorded the primary assist on the game's opening goal. The Islanders prospect is tied for the team lead with four points after the first two games of the playoffs.

Vande Sompel and the London Knights Playoff Series Even After First Two Games

Mitchell Vande Sompel and the reigning Memorial Cup Champion London Knights are tied 1-1 after the opening pair of games in the first round of the OHL playoffs against the Windsor Spitfires.

Vande Sompel tallied an assist on a late third period goal in Game 1 to force overtime, but the Knights were defeated in 4-3 overtime. London responded in Game 2 with a 5-2 win. Vande Sompel registered his second assist of the series on the game winner.

Soderstrom and HV71 Sweep Quarterfinal Round, Move to Semifinals

Linus Soderstrom and HV71 move onto the Swedish Hockey League Semifinals after a four game sweep of Farjestad in the quarterfinals.

The HV71 netminder proved to be the difference in the final two meetings of the series, as the team won both outings by one goal. In Game 3, Soderstrom made 20 saves to secure the 4-3 win. It marked only the fourth time all season Soderstrom allowed three or more goals in a game.

Soderstrom clinched the quarterfinal series win with a 30 save performance in a 3-2 win for HV71.

Soderstrom started all four games for HV71 in the series posting a 1.74 goals against average and a .933 save percentage. Both statistics rank third among SHL goaltenders in the playoffs.

HV71 now moves onto the Semifinals, where they will face off against the Malmo RedHawks in the best-of-seven series to clinch a place in the finals.

Boston University, Minnesota Eliminated from NCAA Tournament

Both the Boston University Terriers and the Minnesota Golden Gophers were defeated in the opening weekend of the NCAA Hockey Tournament.

No. 2 seeded BU faced off against third seeded North Dakota in the NCAA West Regional on Friday in what became a double overtime thriller. Islanders prospect Doyle Somerby opened the scoring for the Terriers with his first goal of the season. Boston University and North Dakota headed into overtime knotted at three, but the Terriers season stayed alive with a double overtime goal to win the game by a score of 4-3 and knock off the defending champs.

The following day, Kieffer Bellows, Somerby and the Terriers returned to the ice to take on the top seeded Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. Boston University fell to the Bulldogs, 3-2, in overtime to end their season. BU finished the season with a 24-12-3 record. Bellows' finished his first collegiate season with seven goals and seven assists for 14 points. Somerby, the Terriers captain, completed his career at BU with 27 points in 151 games.

In the Northeast Regional, the No. 1 seeded Minnesota Gophers drew No. 4 Notre Dame as their first round matchup. Jake Bischoff, Taylor Cammarata, and the Gophers would set a new NCAA record with the team's 37th appearance in the NCAA tournament.

Minnesota held a two goal lead over the Fighting Irish early in the second period, but the Gophers had no answer to three straight Notre Dame goals as the Fighting Irish came back to win the game, 3-2. The Gophers season ended with a 23-12-3 record.

Senior Jake Bischoff played his final game for Minnesota, capping off a strong senior season. Bischoff was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and was a First Team All-Big Ten selection. Taylor Cammarata also capped off his collegiate career, finishing with 93 points in 149 games.

Bischoff signed an entry-level contract with the Islanders on Tuesday morning. 

Missouri Wins Trio of Games
Missouri Mavericks: 31-26-3-5; 5th in Mountain Division; 9th in Western Conference

The Missouri Mavericks went unbeaten this week winning against the Allen Americans and Wichita Thunder. Missouri improves to 5th in the Mountain Division of the ECHL with a 31-26-3-5 record.

The Mavs beat Allen 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday, Wichita 4-2 on Friday, and completed the week with a 3-2 overtime win against Wichita on Saturday. Alex Brooks had both overtime winners for Missouri.

Missouri looks ahead to a pair of back-to-back road games against Allen on Mar. 29 and 30.
