by Staff Writer / New York Islanders

Tomas Marcinko
The New York Islanders have agreed to terms with forward Tomas Marcinko, their 2006 fourth round draft pick, to a three-year entry level contract.

The 20-year old Slovakia native, who just finished his second season with the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League, recorded 36 goals and 47 assists for 83 points in 104 career games with the Colts, while also representing Slovakia at the 2007 and 2008 World Junior Championships.

"Tomas is a very responsible two way player who had a terrific season in 2007-08 with Barrie in the OHL," said Ryan Jankowski, the Islanders Assistant General Manager and Director of Amateur Scouting.

In 2007-08, Marcinko tallied 19 goals and 26 assists for 45 points in 48 games with the Colts, which ranked second on the team in points. In nine career OHL playoff games – all coming this season - Marcinko registered four goals and three assists.

"He created a lot of the offense for Barrie as the number one centerman, but also was a defensive type player who took care of his own zone and thought defense first," added Jankowski. "He was a leader and captain of Barrie after the trade deadline and led his team to an upset victory in the first round of the playoffs this season."

In addition to his OHL career, Marcinko has over four-plus years of experience on his native Slovakian World Junior Team. At this year's World Junior Championships he appeared in six games for Slovakia, scoring two goals and adding four assists with a plus-three rating after recording one goal and three assists at the 2007 WJC. Marcinko also spent time during 2005 and 2006 with the under-18 Slovakian team, where he recorded two goals and two assists in 12 games.

Prior to joining the OHL, Marcinko played three-plus years from 2003 through 2006 at different levels of the Slovakian Elite League. Marcinko appeared in 80 games with HC Kosice's under-20 team, where he recorded 37 goals and 41 assists for 78 points, and saw action in 24 total games with HC Kosice of the Extraliga, scoring two goals.

Marcinko attended training camp and summer mini-camp with the Islanders over the past two seasons.
