The New York Islanders hosted the 5th annual NHL Youth Cup last weekend, as NHL-affiliated youth hockey clubs faced off against each other at at Northwell Health Ice Center, the official practice facility of the New York Islanders. The NHL Youth Cup provides NHL-affiliated AAA youth Hockey clubs an opportunity to play a weekend series of games against each other for all birth years from Squirt Minor through Bantam Major.
The Islanders hosted the 2004, 2006 and 2008 birth years, while the Carolina Hurricanes hosted the 2003, 2005 and 2007 birth years.
The Islanders hosted affiliated youth clubs from the Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins, Buffalo Sabres, Philadelphia Flyers, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes and Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Mid Fairfield Rangers won the 2004 division, the Detroit Red Wings won the 2006 division and Virtua - the Flyers'-affiliate - won the 2008 division.
While the Jr. Islanders didn't win on home ice, the Jr. Isles won the 2007 division in Raleigh, NC.
As an added treat, the Stanley Cup paid a surprise visit to Northwell Health Ice Center for the last day of the NHL Youth Cup Tournament.
