Islanders Fight Cancer - Partner Organizations

by Staff Writer / New York Islanders

This year, the Islanders Fight Cancer initiative and the numerous children, facilities and awareness organizations who benefit from our annual fundraising events, may lose a major source of donations that they normally count on to help meet annual budgets and support their needs because of the current NHL work stoppage. The Islanders organization is still committed to supporting these great charities and important people though. The team is asking fans of the Orange & Blue to take up this cause online, in their community and wherever else they see fit. Whether it be in your own households, schools or workplaces, we hope you’ll help Long Island’s team give back and support those who need us the most right now.

If you’d like to make a donation to the Islanders Children’s Foundation, which will then be filtered to local cancer hospitals, research facilities and awareness organizations, please CLICK HERE. We’d like you to know a little more about the organizations you’re supporting with these donations, so will feature profiles on them throughout Hockey Fights Cancer Month.

Today, we take a look at five very special organizations that the Islanders are proud to partner with and support: Cancer Care, the Don Monti Memorial Foundation, the National Brain Tumor Society, the Icla da Silva Foundation and Movember.

Cancer Care

CancerCare was founded in 1944 in New York City with the mission of helping advanced cancer patients. The lamp was chosen as the symbol for the organization because its light represented warmth, comfort and hope.

From the very beginning, CancerCare provided financial assistance for home care, as well as counseling by professional oncology social workers. By 1980, CancerCare was helping more than 25,000 people with its free counseling services, which to this day are the heart of the organization’s work.

Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation

The Don Monti Memorial Research Foundation is committed to the ultimate goal of eradicating cancer through the research programs it supports. The organization also recognizes that cancer has a very human face. As a result, 40% of the Foundation’s budget is dedicated to patient care at six Don Monti Cancer Centers, as well as at the Don Monti Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Unit at North Shore University Hospital.

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in the US and around the world. With their “Mo’s”, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.
