Islanders celebrate Earth Day

by Staff Writer / New York Islanders

In celebration of the 41st anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, the Islanders have re-energized their environmental efforts along with the rest of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Islanders are presenting a special Earth Day promotion on April 22 and 23 at the team store in the Westfield Sunrise Mall in Massapequa. All fans who spend $25 or more will receive a green Islanders t-shirt and Islanders/LIPA Goal Green drawstring bag. (CLICK HERE FOR TEAM STORE INFORMATION)

Throughout the 2010-11 regular season, the Islanders and Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) implemented Goal Green, with sustainable initiatives including carpool nights, recycling nights, renewable energy offset programs, tailgate recycling operations and community beautification and restoration projects.

The Islanders also participated in a number of other green initiatives, such as publication of the Digital Game Day Magazine, a game program published only online in an effort to go green, and Rock and Wrap It Up! The League-wide food recovery program in which all prepared but untouched food is donated to shelters on Long Island, diverting over 100 tons of waste from landfill and providing 150,000 meals cross country. For their participation in Rock and Wrap It Up!, the Islanders have been selected to receive a 2011 U.S. EPA Environmental Quality Award, the highest recognition presented to the public by the EPA.
