Islanders forwards Matt Moulson and Michael Grabner got to take in the Barclays Golf Tournament at Bethpage Black from Aug. 23-26. They were given "inside the ropes" access, posted from the PGA's official Twitter account, and got to meet several of the participants. Here's what each of them had to say following the event.
It would be an understatement to say I was thrilled to jump at the chance to attend the Barclays FedEx Cup Playoffs with an inside the ropes pass. The PGA wanted to get some athletes tweeting (something I enjoy doing anyways) while following a player of their choice for a round.
I chose to follow Rickie Fowler. He is a great young golfer and an even better person. After following Rickie around for one day it was clear to me why his fans are so loyal to him. On top of having some great hair, a moustache fit for Movember and the ability to pull off a straight brim hat, he conducts himself with the utmost class both with his fans and the game of golf.
Our day started off by getting an up close and personal look at Rickie and Tiger at the driving range. Watching these guys hit balls was something else. After hitting his routine bucket of balls Kyle and I had the chance to talk to Rickie a bit before his round and I gave him my best pep talk. From there we walked to the first tee and I prepared myself for an experience of a lifetime. Rickie started off with a bogey on one and I immediately thought I was bad luck. He bounced back with a string of pars including a 30-foot putt and we found ourselves cheering louder than even the most loyal Fowler fan. We were right on top of the action, basically sitting on the green making every shot even that more exciting.
As we continued through the 18 holes it was an up and down day for both Fowler and his playing partner Huh on the difficult Bethpage course. Walking the beautiful but long course combined with the heat started to get me so it was even more impressive that the players held it together shot after shot while also dealing with the stress of the playoff and a few belligerently rude fans.
After a lot of tweets and some brilliant golf our day came to a close at the 18th green. We followed Rickie and Huh to the media area and had a chance to catch up with Rickie after his round. He came over to talk to us and snap a few pics. I was looking for some words of encouragement for Rickie after a few bad breaks that led to some unfortunate bogeys but I think Rickie put it perfectly, saying ‘Hey that's golf.’”
It was a beautiful day spent on a great course following an incredible young man play the game he loves. I couldn't have asked for a better way to spend a Saturday.
Suffice to say I'm a Rickie Fowler fan for life.
I had the great opportunity to check out the golf tournament at Bethpage Black on Sunday. I was really excited to get there, especially after seeing all the tweets from "Mouls" and "Okie", who were there on Friday and Saturday. I went with my buddy Philipp and as we walked on to the course for the first time, we saw Adam Scott hit his second shot on the 15th hole. That’s when I was like, ‘Wow I am seeing these guys live’ for the first time.
I always wanted to see Tiger Woods hit the ball, so we went on our way to find some of the bigger stars in the tournament. It took us quite a while to find our way but we finally got to see Tiger tee up on a par 3. He did put his tee shot into the gallery but was great to see him walk by so close. I felt like a 10-year-old again. I got to see some great golfers and really see how talented they are and why they are the best of the best. I sure hope I can go to another event in the future.
