Islanders Also Receive a Fifth Round Draft Pick
The New York Islanders have acquired forward Randy Robitaille and a fifth round draft pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for center Mike York. Robitaille, who can play all three forward positions, rejoins the Islanders after playing in ten regular season games and five playoffs games at the end of the 2002-03 season.
"We're very happy to acquire a strong playmaker in Randy Robitaille," said Islanders general manager Garth Snow. "Randy will help us on the power play and he's good on faceoffs. We add another draft pick, which is always good news. And while we acquire a player in Randy whose production is equal to Mike's, we also gain additional cap flexibility."
This season, the 31-year old Robitaille appeared in 27 games for Philadelphia recording five goals and twelve assists for 17 points with 20 penalty minutes. He led the Flyers with a 53.6 faceoff winning percentage, was tied for third on the team in scoring and was second in assists. Robitaille, a native of Ottawa, was signed by Philadelphia as a free agent this past July.
Robitaille has played in 413 games over the course of ten NHL seasons and has suited up for eight different franchises. In his career, he has recorded 68 goals along with 136 assists for 204 points and 161 penalty minutes.
The 5-10, 200-pound Robitaille originally signed with the Boston Bruins as an undrafted free agent out of college in March of 1997. He played collegiate hockey at Miami of Ohio from 1995-96 to 1996-97. In his two seasons there, he played in 75 games and recorded 41 goals with 65 assists for 106 points.
York appeared in 32 games with the Islanders this season recording six goals and seven assists for eleven points and 14 penalty minutes. This was his second season with the Islanders.
This was the second trade between the teams in the less than a week. Last Saturday on December 16th, the Islanders acquired defenseman Freddy Meyer and a conditional third round draft pick from Philadelphia in exchange for defenseman Alexei Zhitnik.
