The Islanders improved to 8-6-2 on the season behind a 35-save shutout performance from Rick DiPietro Wednesday night at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. Goals by Mike York, Jason Blake and Trent Hunter gave the Islanders a 3-0 win and their fourth consecutive road victory.
York got the Islanders off to a good start by cashing in on a Miroslav Satan rebound. York's fourth of the season was on the power play at 4:01 of the first period.
The Islanders kept it a 1-0 game with some gritty penalty killing. For 1:41 the Islanders were down two men in the first period, but like they did in New Jersey, they kept the opposition at bay. Brendan Witt blocked a number of shots, including one with his glove and DiPietro had to make a couple of sprawling saves to keep the momentum on the Islanders' side.
The magic of Blake and Alexei Yashin continued with 5:40 gone by in the second period. Chris Simon head-manned the puck to Blake, who skated into the offensive zone. Blake passed the puck across to Yashin, who returned the puck to Blake with a backhand one-timer. Blake corralled the puck and pushed it over the line for his team-leading ninth goal to make it 2-0 Islanders.
Hunter scored his third goal of the season with 4:29 left in the third period to make it 3-0 Islanders. Mike Sillinger fired a pass up to Viktor Kozlov, who skated in the offensive zone. Kozlov sent a backhand pass to Hunter, who fired a wrist shot over goaltender Marty Turco.
DiPietro held down the fort in the third period stopping 11 shots in the frame.
