Islanders 2013 Draft Central - Thomas Vannelli and Connor Hurley

by Greg Picker / New York Islanders
Committed to his hometown University of Minnesota, Thomas Vannelli looks to progress his career with the six-time national champion Golden Gophers. This past season, the Minneapolis native followed the conclusion of his high school career by moving to the USHL and playing for the USA U-18 team. Vannelli put together a solid performance in the USHL with a plus-7 rating in just 11 games with Team USA. He was also a finalist for the 2013 Minnesota Mr. Hockey Award, presented each year to the state’s top high school hockey player.

Thomas Vannelli is a smooth, efficient skater. It takes him very little effort getting up to top speed and with his size is a player who can make things happen offensively after rushing through the neutral zone. He possesses good vision and the ability to either advance the puck passing it or by skating.
Connor Hurley looks to follow the same route from Edina, MN, to Notre Dame as Islanders forward Anders Lee. Also like Lee, Hurley made a quick stop in the USHL between high school and college. He quickly totaled eight points (one goal, seven assists) in 11 games for the Muskegon Lumberjacks. With Edina, Hurley helped his high school win its 11th state title.

Connor Hurley is a very quick and agile complete player from the Land of 10,000 lakes. He attacks with speed and can deftly set up wingers or defensemen who have jumped up into the play. He will benefit from Jeff Jackson and Notre Dame as they teach him to play the game more efficiently in his own end.
Matt Moulson, Islanders forward
Drafted: 2003, Pittsburgh (9th round, 263rd overall)
"I was actually at lacrosse practice when the draft was going on. When I got home, I got a call from Pittsburgh saying they selected me in the ninth round. I was honored to be selected and knew it would be a long road to the NHL, especially from the ninth round."
