Islanders 2013 Draft Central - Spencer Martin and Michael Giugovaz

by Greg Picker / New York Islanders
Despite playing for the team that scored the fewest goals in the Ontario Hockey League this past season, Spencer Martin helped the Steelheads qualify for the postseason. Martin was the first goaltender selected in the 2011 OHL Priority Selection Draft at 18th overall and has lived up to the Steelheads’ expectations thus far.

Mike Dunham, Islanders Goaltending Coach
Spencer Martin is a big goalie who covers a lot of net. He plays an aggressive style and likes to play the puck.
Rookie Michael Giugovaz split time in goal during his first OHL season. Peterborough failed to qualify for the playoffs in 2012-13, missing by just one point. The Brampton native should expect to take over the reins as the Petes’ starting goaltender next season.

Dominic Tiano, writer,
Giugovaz tracks the puck and the play extremely well, challenges shooters and is positionally strong, especially in close, and is excellent at making second and third saves. He’s not a typical butterfly style goaltender, but one who will battle to do whatever it takes to get in front of a shot. He’s not unorthodox, but somewhere in between.
Kyle Okposo, Islanders forward
Drafted: 2006, NY Islanders (1st round, 7th overall)
"Everyone told me that getting drafted was just the beginning of my career and they were right, but all I could think of at the time was how excited I was. It was a great feeling and I felt a sense of achievement in taking the next step toward playing in the NHL."
