Islanders 2013 Draft Central - Nathan McKinnon and Jonathan Drouin

by Greg Picker / New York Islanders
Centering a line with Jonathan Drouin on his wing, Nathan MacKinnon helped Halifax to an unfathomable record of 58-6-4 this past season. During the playoffs, MacKinnon tallied 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists) in 17 games as Halifax stormed through the QMJHL postseason with a 16-1 record en route to its first QMJHL Championship.

“What makes Nathan stand out is that he has a real quickness with his read and react; his hockey sense – how he sees the ice and his vision. That is something special in a player. He is continuing to physically mature, but already he’s got a lot of grit in his game and he is a competitive player.”

Jonathan Drouin exploded in his sophomore QMJHL season by tallying more than two points-per-game with 105 (41 goals, 64 assists) in just 49 games. Along with fellow projected top-5 pick Nathan MacKinnon, Drouin and the Mooseheads won the Memorial Cup as the top team in the Canadian Hockey League (QMJHL, OHL, WHL).

“Nathan MacKinnon makes players around him better, but if you appear to make Nathan MacKinnon better, you’re doing yourself a solid. It’s not as if people think MacKinnon made him better. It’s more Drouin’s ability to play at that level and side-by-side with him. Drouin has responded very well this season, and that’s why we think of him so highly.”

“It was in Montreal, so I flew there and I stayed at the Queen Elizabeth hotel. I do remember having my picture taking with Mr. Torrey and Al Arbour. I was wearing a bright blue and yellow plaid suit, which was very stylish in 1974. I also toured around with Bill and Al for a couple days, met some of the scouts and was able to put my jersey on to take my photo with them.”
