Islanders 2013 Draft Central - Juuse Saros and Ebbe Sionas

by Greg Picker / New York Islanders
Top ranked European goaltender Juuse Saros has frustrated skaters in Finnish Junior hockey despite a slightly smaller stature than a typical goaltender. Saros led HPK Jr. to a first-place regular season finish and a Finnish Junior title. Saros led all goaltenders that played in more than six games this season in both save percentage and goals against average.

Jusse Saros is a butterfly goalie that has extremely quick feet. He’s good at covering the low part of the net, and scrambles to find loose pucks well.
Ebbe Sionas made the jump from the Swedish U18 league to the U20 league this past season. He also fared very well internationally, backstopping Team Sweden at the U18 and U19 levels. During his seven games with the U18 team, Sionas posted a 2.66 GAA and .918 SV%. The Faringso native hopes to continue the streak of at least one Swedish goaltender having been selected in the top two rounds for the past two years.

Ebbe Sionas moves well around his crease which allows him to be in good position to make saves. He has quick feet and hands, and controls his rebounds well.
Matt Carkner, Islanders defenseman
Drafted: 1999, Montreal (2nd round, 58th overall)
"Looking back at my draft day I remember how nervous I was and how excited I was at the same time. I had my whole family with me and was hoping I would be drafted in the first couple rounds. Luckily, I went in the second round to the Montreal Canadiens. It was a very exciting moment for me and my family. I was thrilled to be given an opportunity to play in the NHL."
