IceWorks Summer Camps

by Brian Croce / New York Islanders
Islanders Iceworks is gearing up for a big summer with its hockey and figure skating camps.

Members of the Islanders coaching staff will be on hand at many of the camps, providing an unmatched insight to the game and teaching the basic fundamentals of what it takes to become an elite hockey player.

Intro to the Islanders Elite Training Camp: On Saturday, July 16, Iceworks will host the Intro to the Islanders Elite Training Camp. Islanders Skill Development Coach and four-time NCAA All-American Bernie Cassell, will lead attendees through a one-hour training session focused on stick-handling and puck control.

The camp will be broken into two segments: Mites/Squirts will run from 12-1 p.m. and Peewees/Bantams take the ice from 1-2 p.m. The camp is for Tier 1 and 2 travel hockey players only and costs $20. The fee will go toward registration for the Islanders Elite Training Camp on August 22-25.

Islanders Elite Training Camp: The Islanders Elite Training Camp will feature workouts on and off the ice. The Islanders strength and conditioning coach will oversee and coordinate dry land training while on-ice sessions will be coordinated by the team's assistant coaches and skill development coach.  Registration costs $375 and includes jersey, t-shirt, shorts and a water bottle.

The Mites/Squirts session runs 8 a.m. -12 p.m. and Peewees/Bantams hit the ice 12:30 -4:30 p.m. each day from August 22-25.

These exclusive training sessions and opportunities to learn from professional coaches is something Andrew Morenberg, Hockey Director at Islanders Iceworks, enjoys being a part of.

"Our hockey academy presents the opportunity for children to benefit from our comprehensive USA Hockey age-appropriate curriculum that includes daily ice time, off-ice conditioning and valuable classroom instruction as well,” Morenberg said. “There will also be special guest appearances by New York Islanders players during camp."

One Day-Goalie Clinic: On August 20, Iceworks will host a one day goalie clinic. Islanders goalie coaches, Mike Dunham and Sudarshan "Sudsie" Maharaj, will take attendees through a two-hour training session split between proper goalie techniques, and strength and conditioning.

Registration for the clinic costs $50 with Mites/Squirts/Peewees running from 12-2 p.m. while Bantams & above go from 1 -3 p.m.

Summer 2011 Figure Skating Camp: Islanders Skating Academy is hosting the figure skating camp this summer. The camp is for Learn to Skate (Level 2) and up. There will be on-ice and off-ice workouts to improve all figure skaters’ abilities.

Week three of the camp runs from Aug. 1-5, costing $499 and includes lunch.
