In the beginning of the 2007-08 hockey season, the Islanders introduced a contest where schools asked all of their students to hold onto any ticket stubs from any Islanders games they attended. At the end of the season, all the schools mailed in all of the stubs they collected to the Islanders and the school which collected the most won the contest. The prize to the winners would receive would be for the Islanders’ ICE Tour to set up all their fun activities during their field day. With just over 700 stubs submitted, the winner of this year’s contest was Norman J. Levy Lakeside Elementary in Merrick. The Islanders ICE Tour stopped by during the school’s annual “Peace and Friendship” day to provide the kids with some great fun. The Family Fan Fest was set up for all the kids to enjoy as they raced each other through the inflatable obstacle course, bounced around in the moonbounce, or took their best shot in the slap shot booth. Sparky and the Ice Girls came along as well to greet their young, dedicated Islander fans. The crowd roared as Sparky was raised over 30 feet high by the Merrick Volunteer Fire Department’s fire truck, waiving to all of his fans below. Not even the wet weather could put a damper on such a fun filled day.
